Vasundhara entrepreneur award

The 2nd Vasundhara NE Woman Entrepreneur will be conferred on September 19 at Shillong. instituted by Sreemanta Sankar Mission of Guwahati, the wvent will see eight exceptionally talented women entrepreneurs from eight states of Northeast India being awarded in the state winners category and one among them being crowned with the coveted award for the year 2013-14.

M. Rajeshwar Rao, Chief General Manager, Financial Markets Operation Department, Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai will grace the occasion as Chief Guest besides a host of dignitaries who will grace the occasion as distinguished guests.

Instituted in 2014 by the Sreemanta Sankar Mission of Guwahati, it has emerged as a prestigious and one of a kind award and felicitation program covering the eight states of entire NE region. The award given to exceptional woman entrepreneurs with unique business ventures having a strong social commitment are selected by a selection panel constituted with eminent personalities from different sector related with entrepreneurship and business.

The state winners as has been declared by the selection panel for the  Vasundhara  NE Woman Entrepreneur of the year (2013-14) award are Lata Lepcha from Sikkim, Toko Likha Yaram from Arunachal Pradesh, T. Jemima Achumi from Nagaland, Moiregthem Muktamani Devi from Manipur, Lalhimpuii Hmar from Mizoram, Sukla Rani Debbarma from Tripura, Queency Thangkhiew from Meghalaya and Kanta Dey from Assam.

All of these women selected for the award have displayed rare sense of entrepreneurship and uniqueness in their idea and vision. For instance, while Smti T. Jemima Achumi of Nagaland has set up a fully automatic meat processing center with imported machineries from Germany and France, Toko Likha Yaram of Arunachal Pradesh has set up a cold storage at Banderdewa. Likewise Moiregthem Muktamani Devi of Manipur produces woolen knitted shoes and supplies to Indian army and also exports to countries such as UK, Australia and Korea. Their enterprises are exemplary in the otherwise male dominated sector of business and industry for which they have been identified and are being honoured, said Asomee Dutta Baruah, General Secretary of Sreemanta Sankar Mission of Guwahati.

The winner will walks away with a cash award of Rs. 25,000 besides trophy, a citation and a shawl and the eight state winners are being honoured with cash award of Rs. 10,000, a trophy, a citation and a shawl each.

Instituted with the sole objective of identifying the latent talents among the hardworking women entrepreneurs of NE region and recognizing and encouraging them for their endeavor and business achievements, the  award in its second year is being collaborated by the SME Division of the State Bank of India, NE Region and the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. The award ceremony has also been organized during the IIM, Shillong annual management conclave  Emerge 2015 which will take place on 19th and 20th September, 2015.

Aghonar Bataraa released at press club

Aghonar Bataraa, a collection of Assamese poems penned by Dr Lukumani Goswami was released on Sunday at Guwahati Press Club. Published by Vibgyor publications, the book was released by eminent journalist DN Chakrabarty. The function was also addressed by educationist Dr G Sarma, administrator Manimala Barthakur, music director Bhupen Uzir, journalist Nava Thakuria etc.

Jugaxandhit America released at press club

An Assamese book titled Jugaxandhit America authored by Dr Arupjyoti Choudhury was released recently at Guwahati Press Club. Published by Purbanchal Prakash, the book is more than a travelogue as it provides a glance of the socio-economic & political scenario of the United States of America. This book is an analytical reflection of the cultural mindsets of the Americans as the supreme power on Earth. Guwahatians pay tribute to Dr Khanikar

The civil society groups and media persons on Friday paid rich tributes  to Bhesaj Ratna Dr Gunaram Khanikar, who left for heavenly abode on early morning of 7 January 2016. The Guwahatians in a simple condolence meeting held at Guwahati Press Club remembered the immense contributions made by the herbal medicine specialist for the  society. Dr Khanikar, 67,  breathed his last in the city based Down Town Hospital at around 1.25 am. Herbal medicine expert Gunaram Khanikar of Tetelital, Golaghat passed away on early Thursday morning following a heart attack. He was 69. 

Demand for completion of War Memorial

Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) in northeast India has urged the Assam government to complete the construction of proposed war memorial on the northern bank of Dighalipukhuri in the city at the earliest. 2 dead in Assam quake

The massive earthquake that rattled Assam for nearly a minute claimed 2 persons on Monday morning. Both the casualties have taken place in Guwahati. Identified Raju Bora and Niranjan Das from Maligaon area, died when they were running out of the homes in the earthquake. Guwahati Medical College Hospital alone has been offering treatment to 14 people who sustained injury in the calamity. This is apart from 2 other people who were admitted to the MMCH. Hundreds of buildings and boundary walls including temples and mosques  have cracked in the quake across the state. There are reports of damage in the railway tracks.   

NE trembles in 6.9 magnitude tremor

A huge tremor rocked Assam and Manipur early in the morning on Monday unleashing panic in both the north eastern state. The 6.9 magnitude tremor which originated along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur brewed a great deal of damage in Manipur. Cracks are seen in many buildings in Manipur where people in the wee hours ran out to the streets. The tremor was felt nearly one hour creating huge hue and cry among a section of Guwahatians when the clock struck at 4-49 in the morning. There is no immediate report of any damage of property in Assam.    

5th Jeevan Kite & River Festival kicks off

The 5th Jeevan Kite & River Festival kicks off with the theme‎ "Brahmaputra Campaign‬"  from January 1, 2016.  This campaign is an effort to connect the urban generation with the river. The event will continue till January 7 at Rajaduwar Ghat, near Sukreswar Park, Guwahati. Kite flying, adventure sports, cultural shows are some attractions of the event.
