In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

Youths crushed to death

Two local youths were killed in Nagaon district when a speeding truck rammed in to their scooter on Tuesday.The tragic mishap took place on the national highway in Bebejia when the scooter in which the youths were riding on from the market.The duo died on the spot. In a bizarre incident that sends shockwaves across the state, a Class X student from Guwahati was burnt alive in Morigaon on Monday.The incident took place in Morigaon where a school boy was burnt to death at a bhelaghar hours after he went with his one of his friends in the morning.Police on Tuesday arrested his four friends who took the student to Morigaon from Guwahati.

Mooshahary to fight from Kokrajhar

After months of will-he-won’t-he, Ranjeet Sekhar Mooshahary finally announced that he would contest the upcoming Lok Sabbha polls.Talking to reporters in Kokrajhar on Tuesday, the former Meghalaya Governor gave hint of contesting the polls as an independent candidate.His announcement bears significance a few days after he visited the Aam Admi Party office in Guwahati where he was apprised of the party’s position and procedures.

Cong strategy for RS polls

Rajya Sabha polls are slated for February 7. The ruling party is believed to have chalked out a slew of strategies to win the three Rajya Sabha seats.Party leaders are in touch with AIUDF and independent legislators to ensure win in all the three seats.The party still falls short of 8 votes to occupy the three seats which are set to be vacant following the expiry of the terms for Bhubneswar kalita from Congress, Biswajeet Daimary from BPF along with Birendra Prasad Baishya from AGP.

LS polls: AIUDF to go it alone

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) will fight it alone in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.This was what party president Badaruddin Ajmal told reporters in Guwahati after he held a close door meeting on Tuesday. The party is set to field candidates in 8 seats this time.Party sources told assamtimes that they are in touch with BJP and AGP to help their candidate win the Rajya Sabbha polls slated for February 7.

Goswami’s death shrouded in mystery

Dr Bhagawan Goswami’s death seems to have shrouded in mystery a day after the lifeless professor of the Cotton College was recovered on the Brahmaputra in Panbazar on Monday.After the post mortem, his family members have called it a cold blooded murder citing a number of clues. His family members claimed to have seen an injury mark on the forehead of the body along with some mysterious position which suggested it a case of murder..His wife demanded a high level probe to ascertain the truth behind the mysterious death of Dr Goswami. Amid Bhugali bihu festivity at least eight persons were killed and 10 others have been injured in three different road mishaps on Tuesday wee hours.In a shocking mishap, four policemen were killed when the Scorpio vehicle carrying them collided head with a truck in Laluk in the wee hours.
