In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

Nobody can stop Cong: Gogoi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Thursday that nobody can stop the ruling party from victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi said that the ruling party will be able to win the entire five seats in the first phase of the polls slated for April 7.This phase will cover Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Koliabor, Tezpur and Dibrugarh.

Congress leadership is all set to deal with the dissidence within the legislative body.Party president Sonia Gandhi has sent senior leader Mani Shankar Aiyer to find the facts of the dissidents where Lakhimpur candidate Ranee Narah has not received any support from a few of her legislators.Aiyer will talk to Sadiya MLA Balin Chetia and his Chabua counterpart Raju Sahu in Tinsukia on Thursday to feel their pulse.Chetia has openly announced non cooperation while Raju Sahu is avoiding Narah even in the electioneering.AICC will take the final call after getting report from Mani Shankar Aiyer who is camping in Tinsukia.   

KPLT diktat to Diphu candidates

KPLT has asked the Lok Sabha poll candidates in Dihpu to clear their stand on the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.According to information, the Karbi militant outfit has sent notices to the candidates on Wednesday to promise that if elected, they would honour the Sixth Schedule in the hills district.  

Police summons Badarpur MLA

Its confirm. Trouble awaits Jamaluddin Ahmed. Police have asked the Congress MLA to appear before the Badarpur Police station latest by Friday.The authorities have already taken up the case with the Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi and Secretary GK Das.   The Badarpur MLA received the directives a week after he threatened minister Siddik Ahmed to set on fire if the latter comes in his area to campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Rio campaigns for AGP

Nagaland chief minister Neiphu Rio on Wednesday urged the people to vote for AGP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a poll rally in Majuli to campaign for Lakhimpur AGP candidate Hariprasad Dihingia, Rio said that a strong regionalism is key to sustainable development in the north east.He said that the regional parties in the north east should fight unitedly in New Delhi to ensure that the region gets special care and attention of the Centre.Lakhimpur along with Koliabor, Jorha, Dirugarh and Tezpur will go to the polls in the first phase slated for April 7.

Cong fears EVM manipulation

Assam Congress has lodged a complaint before the poll authorities fearing deployment of doctored electronic voting machines in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The major technical anomalies came to light on Tuesday in Jorhat district where the returning officer conducted training of polling officials with mock polling in full view of the representatives of all political parties.Taking serious note of it, the ruling party got in touch with the authorities who admitted the technical snag. Apprehending large scale anomalies in the EVMs, the ruling party has asked the poll authorities to ensure error-free poll in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.      

Kirip, Madhab file nominations

Mongoldoi AGP candidate Madhab Rajbanshi and his Congress counterpart Kirip Chaliha filed their nominations to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 24.Accompanied by senior party leaders Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with over 500 supporters, Chaliha reached the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises in Mongoldoi at 2 in the afternoon where he filed his nomination papers before the returning officer.Hours after that AGP candidate Madhab Rajbanshi reached the DC office premises with a huge number of partymen. Then he filed his nomination papers before the authorities.The election in this third phase will take place on April 24 in Mongoldoi along with Barpeta, Dhubri, Nagaon...

KMSS disrupts CM rally in Majuli

A least ten KMSS activists sustained injury when police sprang upon them for trying to disrupt chief minister’s poll rally in Majuli on Wednesday.The incident took place in the Kamalabari area when Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was addressing a rally to campaign for Ranee Narah who is contesting from Lakhimpur.All of a sudden, over one hundred KMSS activists started showing black flags to the chief minister. Some others shouted slogans against Gogoi.Security forces deployed there resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters where at least ten protesters sustained injury.  

NSLA behind Gossaigaon shoot out!

National Santhal Liberation Army’s role suspected in the Gossaigaon shoot out where three construction workers were killed on Wednesday.The militant outfit is believed to have attacked the bridge construction project for failing to meet the extortion demands.According to sources, the contractor did not meet the extortion demand by the outfit and the shoot out is believed to be its fall out.  The incident took place at Kochugaoon Borbzar area at around 11-30 in the morning  when three motorcycle born youths halted and started firing indiscriminately at the workers engaged in the bridge construction site.Identified as Rajjib Mushahary, Ashatun Bibi and Khairbur Sheikh were killed on...

Nagaon BJP candidate Rajen Gohain and his AGP counterpart Mridula Borkakoty filed their nominations to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 24.Accompanied by over 500 the sitting MP reached the Nagaon Deputy Commissioner’s office premises at 12-30 in the afternoon where he filed his nomination papers before the returning officer.On the other hand, accompanied by senior leaders along with many party workers the AGP candidate took out a procession across the Nagaon town for two hours.
