7 killed in Barpeta lightening

Altogether seven people including women and children died in a lightening incident in Barpeta sending shockwaves across the state on Saturday.

Amid thunder squall the lightening took place on a boat carrying at least 50 people on the river Beki in the evening where at least 21 others sustained injury.

The injured are battling for life at the Barpeta Medical College Hospital. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed deep shock at the lightening incident and announced Rs 4 lakh each to the family members of those killed in the incident.

NIA probing the Burdwan bombing case has arrested 6 more villagers from Barpeta on Wednesday a day before the investigating team left for Bangladesh. All these villagers including a woman were picked up from from Chatala village.Five of these villagers including the Chatala village gaonburah are being kept at the NIA regional office in Guwahati for intense grilling. Yet another incident sends shockwaves in Barpeta district where a youth died after he slipped from a moving train on Saturday. The incident took place when the youth was travelling on the North East Express and as the train arrived in Dayaguri in Barpeta district he suddenly fell on the ground to be crushed by the train.

Nalbari police have arrested four dreaded Maoist extremists and seized two powerful grenades from their possession on Thursday. Acting on a tip off that a gang of Maoist extremists hailing from Jharkhand has been camping in Koithalkuchi area, police conducted a raid at a house where they were captured. Bhawanipur police busted a sex racket after the arrest of four people on Monday. Local residents in Bhawanipur Daxinhati told Assam Times that acting on their complaints, police raided the residence of Mrinal Talukdar on Monday midnight where they found a youth along with two girls. According to allegations, Talukdar and his wife have been running the sex racket for the last couple of months forcing them to move police for action.
