Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.

GUWAHATI: Stung by widespread criticism and simmering anger of the landless lot, chief minister Sarbanand Sonowal orders early steps to rehabilitate those evicted in the Amchang wildlife sanctuary, Lakhimpur and Karbi Anglong. According to sources, Sonowal asked forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma and her cabinet Naba Kumar Doley to ensure early steps to rehabilitate these people.

GUWAHATI: A forest official engaged in the massive eviction drive in the Amchang wildlife sanctuary sustained serious injury when an evicted person attacked him with a sharp weapon on Tuesday. The clash took place in the morning when the huge joint team of forest department and district administration resumed the drive to evict the illegal settlers. As they started demolishing a house the owner had an altercation with the forest official who was busy with his assigned task defying the resistance. NAMRUP: A leopard cub was found dead in Namrup which was believed to have been killed during a fight between two tiger on Monday. Tea garden workers spotted the lifeless cub under the tea bushes in Hapjan Estate in the morning. The body which was rushed for post mortem bore injury marks in neck and head. Later in a statement Namrup deputy ranger Pranab Kalita also doubted a fierce fighting of leopards where the cub died in attack. Leopards often keep coming down from the Joyepore reserve forest to the human habitats and tea gardens in search of food.
