It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.
The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

The overall flood situation starts improving on Sunday following the halt of rains in the catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh. The water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributeries are gradually receding during the last 24 hours. “The waterlevels of the mighty river are expected to recede further during the last 24 hours,” water resources development department officials told Assam Times on Sunday. Surface communications that came into a grinding halt in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji have been restored after flood waters damaging crops in several hectors in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts.
Assam is most unsafe for women. The state tops the list of crimes against fair sex in the entire north eastern region. According to the National Crime Records Bureau report the state remains in the seventh place in the all India level. Assam jumped to 17,449 cases of crimes against women in 2013 as against 13,544 in 2012. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi seeks more trains for Assam in the upcoming rail budget. In a letter to railway minister Sadananda Gowda on Saturday, Gogoi stressed a super fast weekly express train between Dibrugarh and Pune. This is apart from daily inter-city express trains between Guwahati and Murkongselek, Guwahati and Naharlagun, Rangiya and Naharlagun, Rangiya and Dibrugarh. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s fate seems to have been hanging in balance as party high command is believed to have been looking for his replacement. Sonia Gandhi is likely to take the final call likely by the next week. But she has been waiting for Rahul Gandhi who is on a foreign visit.
