After years of hopes and aspiration, Assam gets its Mega food park in Tihu—first of its kind in the north east.
Local people and economists called it a major boost to the food processing sector which will help the state add value and reduce food wastage.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal opened the park at a function attended by union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju and sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Officials told Assam Times that the Centre sanctioned a Mega Food Park to M/s North East Mega Food Park Pvt. Ltd in the district. The North East Mega Food Park has been set up in 50 acre of land at the cost of Rs. 76 crore.
It has facilities of fully operational industrial sheds for SMEs, developed industrial plots for lease to food processing units, Dry Warehouse of 10000 MT, Cold Storages of 3000 MT, Common Effluent Treatment plant, Quality Control Labs etc.
The common administrative building for office and other uses by the entrepreneurs. 6 PPCs are also proposed to be set up at Nagaon, Badarpur, Tinsukia, Barapani, Krishnai and Kajalgaon which will provide facilities for primary processing and storage near the farms.
Badal said that the Mega Food Park will leverage an additional investment of about Rs. 250 crore in 30-35 food processing units in the Park and generate a turnover of about Rs. 450-500 Crore annually.
In his speech, Rijiju said that the Mega Food Park shall go a long way in helping the farmers of the North East. He said that the NE Region has great potential for Food Processing and the Government has taken many steps to promote the Food Processing sector as well as Organic Farming in the region.

An RTI activist has revealed misuse of OBC certificates by sons and daughters of some high-ranking Government officials just to sneak into the state Home Department. Assam is all set to go to the second and next phase of assembly polls on Monday. Altogether 96,77,113 voters are set to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of596 candidates --449 men and 47 women who are in the fray for 62 seats. Once again Ulfa springs surprise. In a significant move that gives Congress some sort of relief, the banned outfit has decided not to give bandh call to disrupt the visitofprime minister Manmohan Singh slated for April 7. This was what Ulfa publicity wing leader Arunodoy Dohotiya announced at a statement e-mailed to assamtimes on Tuesday. The announcement further suggests that ULFA will not oppose the visit of Dr Singh on April 11 to cast his vote in Dispur.
