Assam is all set to go to the second and next phase of assembly polls on Monday. Altogether 96,77,113 voters are set to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of596 candidates --449 men and 47 women who are in the fray for 62 seats. This phase will cover 14 districts namely Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Altogether 50,09,083 voters are male while 46,68,030 others are female.
These people will exercise their franchise in 12,589 polling stations. According to election commission, 2033 stations are hyper-sensitive, 4175 475 are vulnerable.
In a bid to ensure free and fair poll, the authorities have deployed 345 companies of central paramilitary forces apart from a number of micro observes.
Both the ruling Congress and the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad have a number of heavyweights in this phase. Besides, this phase will be very crucial for Bodoland People's Front (BPF).
Top candidates include healthy ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rockybul Hussain, Akon Bora, Pramila Rani Brahma, Chandan Brahma, and Bhumidhar Barman.
AGP heavyweights include president Chandra Mohan Patowary, two-time chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Phani Bhusan Chowdhury and Keshab Mahanta.
An interesting contest awaits Samaguri constituency. There will be a bitter fight as it is Prafulla Kumar Mahanta versus Rockybul Hussain, a powerful minister in the Gogoi cabinet. Mahanta is also contesting from his home turf Barhampur. Other contests include a tough battle on April 11 is the prestigious Dispur constituency in Guwahati as senior AGP leader Atul Bora is pitted against social welfare minister Akon Bora.
