After years of hopes and aspiration, Assam gets its Mega food park in Tihu—first of its kind in the north east.
Local people and economists called it a major boost to the food processing sector which will help the state add value and reduce food wastage.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal opened the park at a function attended by union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju and sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Officials told Assam Times that the Centre sanctioned a Mega Food Park to M/s North East Mega Food Park Pvt. Ltd in the district. The North East Mega Food Park has been set up in 50 acre of land at the cost of Rs. 76 crore.
It has facilities of fully operational industrial sheds for SMEs, developed industrial plots for lease to food processing units, Dry Warehouse of 10000 MT, Cold Storages of 3000 MT, Common Effluent Treatment plant, Quality Control Labs etc.
The common administrative building for office and other uses by the entrepreneurs. 6 PPCs are also proposed to be set up at Nagaon, Badarpur, Tinsukia, Barapani, Krishnai and Kajalgaon which will provide facilities for primary processing and storage near the farms.
Badal said that the Mega Food Park will leverage an additional investment of about Rs. 250 crore in 30-35 food processing units in the Park and generate a turnover of about Rs. 450-500 Crore annually.
In his speech, Rijiju said that the Mega Food Park shall go a long way in helping the farmers of the North East. He said that the NE Region has great potential for Food Processing and the Government has taken many steps to promote the Food Processing sector as well as Organic Farming in the region.
Atleast nine persons including four journalists sustained injury when ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Mongoldoi on Thursday. The incident took place at the police station campus at 6.30 in the evening. Eyewitnesses told assamtimes that two motorcycle born youths lobbed the IED from the national highway to the campus targetting a function. Poachers strike again in Kaziranga. Two one-horned rhinos were killed and chopped off their horns in the National Park on Wednesday.Poachers were learnt to have killed the rhinos near the NH-37----200 meters away from Dirang forest camp under Burapahar range office in the park.According to KNP officials, the incident took place at around 3.20 am nearby the NH-37. Two powerful grenade explosions marred Independance day celebrations in Kokrajhar on Thursday. The fist blast took place at JV Road at 10.30 in the morning where one person sustained. Identified as Bipul Brahma, he was rushed to the hospital. Another bomb exploded in front of BPF head office.

Amid a mammoth security arrangement yet another grenade explosion rocks Chirang a few hours ahead of the Independence Day. The blast took place at ratabari in the evening. There is no report of any casualty.
NDFB’ anti-talk faction trigger two grenade blasts in Chirang district a day before the Independence Day on Wednesday. The militants triggered two grenade blasts and two improvised explosive devices were recovered. No injury or casualty was reported. The grenade blasts took place in Chirang district around 8.40 am.
