9 injured in ULFA attack

Atleast nine persons including four journalists sustained injury when ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Mongoldoi on Thursday. The incident took place at the police station campus at 6.30 in the evening. Eyewitnesses told assamtimes that two motorcycle born youths lobbed the IED from the national highway to the campus targetting a function. The explosion took place with a huge sound leaving 9 people injured. They include 2 policemen and 4 journalists who were covering the function.

The injured have been rushed to the hospital. Hours after the attack, the insurgent outfit owned up the responsibilty of the incident.

Watery grave for 2 as boat capsizes

Two women met watery grave in Lakhimpur when the boat ferrying a few people capsized on the middle of a river on Wednesday.

The incident took place on the river Bogolijan which started swelling from Tuesday after NEEPCO released a huge volume of waters from its Ranganadi dam.

As the boat reached the middle of the river, the boat  suddenly capsized under the impact of the strong current forcing many local residents to come to the rescue of the passengers.

SDRF jawans and local residents tried their best to rescue them. But they failed to save Pallavi Saikia and Munmi Saikia who met watery grave sending shock in the entire area.

Spring is back. Tender leaves have dressed the trees afresh. Season flowers start blooming brightly. The rivers are set to regain their strength because of the rain that lashes parts of the state. Birds are chirping with the music of spring. That what strikes the minds of the people who are gearing up for the Rongali Bihu slated for Monday next.

Rural women are busy with preparing varieties of sweets and pastries to be served in the much-vaunted festival. Markets are teeming with people for bihu shopping. Some others are busy with weaving bihuwans for their near and dear ones. That’s the undying tradition of the Assamese girls which enjoys a unique degree of veneration.  

With drums and cymbals, flute and pepa, the youths are all out to make this festival a grand success. This is what the festive mood that grips the people of all walks of life these days.

The festival was originated in the rural areas. But with the passage of time, this pomp and gaiety has reached the urban lot.

Guwahati alone is preparing to host at least 200 cultural function to mark the occasion. The cultural functions focusing the huchories would take place from the day one---the day of Goru bihu where the cows would be worshipped. Greeting and good wishes are pouring in different parts of the state. Over to the people of Assam.

Reang girl gangraped and killed in Katlichera

HAILAKANDI: Unidentified miscreants gangraped and killed a Reang girl inside her house in Hailakandi sending huge wave cinemas of shock and anger across the state on Thursday.

The incident of double crime took place at Betchera gaon in Katlichera on Wednesday evening where miscreants were believed to have forcibly stormed in to the house where the Reang girl was inside it in the absence of other family members.

After gangraping, the miscreants were believed to have strangulated the girl to death and escaped. Her body was found on Thursday wee hours.
Police investigation is underway to nab the perpetrators.
