Gamlin joins as Delhi chief secy

Despite stiff resistance from Arvind Kejriwal and his lobby senior IAS officer from Assam Shakuntala Gamlin took over as Delhi chief secretery. 

Shakuntala, the daughter of former minister Lalit Doley and wife of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Jarbom Gamlin has alleged intimidation by a section of bureacrates not to take over. 

He was Lt Governor Jung who appointed her in the top post defying the chief minister's opposition who calls her corrupt.

A delegation of British parliamentarians is likely to visit Assam as part of goodwill visit to India next year. According to British Deputy High Commissioner Furssedonn Wood, who was a recent visit to Guwahati told chief minister Tarun Gogoi that the delegation would visit the state likely in the first part of the year. The Asom Gana Parishad has urged prime minister Narendra Modi to accord national drink status for Assam tea. That too a fortnight after Union industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman denied any plan or it despite Dispur’s request.Tea deserves the status considering the fact that tea is a beverage of Indian origin, the party stated in its memorandum faxed to the Prime Minister on Monday. The party said it was unhappy with the recent statement by the industry minister who refused to accept the demand saying the national drink status for tea would hamper the growth of coffee.

In yet another landmark judgment, a trial court on Monday sentenced five persons to life imprisonment four years after they gangraped a girl from Manipur on a moving vehicle at Dhaula Kuan. Additional sessions judge Virender Bhat announced the quantum of punishment a couple of days after they were convicted in the shocking case. The five convicted men — Shamshad alias Khutkan, Usman alias Kale, Shahid alias Chhota Billi, Iqbal alias Bada Billi and Kamruddin were present inside the court when the quantum of punishment was announced for the offence. Karbi Anglong district braces up for an 1,000 hour bandh from October 27.  The Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) has called for the an unprecedented bandh from 5 in the morning to raise the demands for resumption of statehood talks with the Centre apart from a Bill for autonomous state in the winter session within the ambit of Article 244(A) of the Constitution.Talking to Assam Times, JACAS officials alleged that the hill people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao have been failing to get any attention of the people in the distant Delhi forcing them to take this course of action.  
Ranjan Daimary is likely to get bail again. The NDFB boss who has languishing in jail for the last two months is likely to be granted the bail on October 21 when the TADA court will be considering the green signal from the government which was required.According to sources, Dsipur has already gave green signal for granting bail to Daimary who was re arrested on September 29 after the Tada court refused to extend his interim bail.Dispur gave green signal considering Daimary’s tripartite suspension of operation agreement with the Centre and the Assam government last year and was holding negotiations.
