Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.

Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.

The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.

Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

This exposes the governments scandalous motives and false poll promises. This also goes against the spirits of the Pro Talks faction of ULFA , whom the government had promised the STfication of the state .Successive governments have done this and the present has proved that they are no better than the previous.

NDFB militant killed

Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore NDFB militant belonging to the Songbijit faction at an encounter in Kokrajhar district on Sunday. The encounter took place in the evening at Ultapani jungle under Bismuri police outpost. The militant cadres was identified as Bilifang Basumatary of Mohenpur village. He is believed to be the section commander in Bismuri. Army man nabbed for rape attempt

An army jawan has been arrested on Sunday for alleged attempt to rape a sleeping woman inside in an air-conditioned coach of a running train on Sunday.The incident took place in the wee hours at the Guwahati-Ledo Inter City Express. 9 Assam workers killed in Imphal

At least nine workers from Assam were killed and 11 injured when suspected militants triggered a powerful IED blast at Khoyathong in the heart of Imphal on Friday. Six others have been critically injured. The bomb exploded at 7.35 in the evening inside a camp where the labourers housed. Nine workers died on the spot.  Police called it an IED planted by militants. This has forced the security forces to step up vigil in the capital city.

Assam youths found dead in AP

Bodies of two youths from Chirang district of Assam have been recovered in Andhra Pradesh two days after they left for West Bengal.Identified as Dhan Basumatary and Bishnu Narzary, their bodies were recovered at Nallore Railway station on Wednesday. Both they were accompanied by Dawa Basumatary to West Bengal who has been remaining traceless.

Lifeless Timothy, Naruttam reaching homes

The mortal remains Timothy Sinha and Naruttam Deuri are arriving in their homes on Wednesday.The bodies will be accorded a guard of honour at the INS Ashwini at Colaba in Mumbai on Wednesday morning. Assam flood scene grim

At least 10 districts are reeling under flood water. The worst-hit are river island Majuli and the Kaziranga National Park. Rising water of the Brahmaputra has inundated vast tracts of land in Kaziranga's Burapahar, Bagori and northern parts of Agratoli with three animal casualty reported. Two deer were knocked down by speeding vehicles in Harmoti area when they were on way to the highlands, while an elephant drowned in the flood waters in Bagori range.
