Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.

Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.

The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.

Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

This exposes the governments scandalous motives and false poll promises. This also goes against the spirits of the Pro Talks faction of ULFA , whom the government had promised the STfication of the state .Successive governments have done this and the present has proved that they are no better than the previous.

Armed rebel killed in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: Security forces claimed to have killed an NDFB-S rebel at an encounter in Gossaigaon on Saturday. Identified as Prakash Haksama, he died on his way to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital on Friday wee hours. Kokrajhar journalist passes away

KOKRAJHAR: Senior Kokrajhar based journalist Govinda Nath passed after prolonged illness on Thursday night. He was 55. Nath, who was associated with Asomiya Pratidin as correspondent was one of the most popular persons in the district who have been suffering from multiple organ failure. Many organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
