Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.

Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.

The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.

Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

This exposes the governments scandalous motives and false poll promises. This also goes against the spirits of the Pro Talks faction of ULFA , whom the government had promised the STfication of the state .Successive governments have done this and the present has proved that they are no better than the previous.

KOKRAJHAR: Hundreds of ABSU leaders and workers took out a candle light protest in Kokrajhar on Sunday evening in protest against the Maibong incident where two protesters were killed in police firing. The participating protesters demanded an impartial probe into the police firing incident, action against guilty officers apart from adequate compensation for the deceased families. Mother kills daughters, commits suicide

HOJAI: Caught in abject penury, a woman in killed her two daughters before committing suicide in Hojai sending huge shockwaves across the state on Sunday. Armed rebel killed in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: Security forces claimed to have killed an NDFB-S rebel at an encounter in Gossaigaon on Saturday. According to police, the encounter took place inside the Ripu reserve forest during a combing operation. Identified as Ricardo Hazuary, the rebel died on the spot early in the morning.
