Kokrajhar DC stress toilet facilities for girls

Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Taneshwar Malakar inaugurated the awareness programme of ‘National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation week’ on Monday at Basic Training auditorium, Kokrajhar. The week long programme has been organised by District Water and Sanitation Committee, Kokrajhar and will continue till March 22.

Speaking on the occasion, Malakar said that the people have the responsibility to keep clean to their surroundings.

He regretted that the hospitals and some offices are not maintaining clean which needs to be dealt with the participation of the common people.

“Where boys and girls go for toilet?”, Malakar asked and affirmed that there should have toilet facilities for girls and boys separately in the schools and preferences should be given to construct at least girls toilet.

He maintained that there should have toilet for girls or womens in every institution and public places. On the natures’ call that the people always encounters while travelling by buses in distant places, he said that there should have toilet facilities be it pay and use so that the passengers do not suffer in an awkward situation.

Malakar also urged the Inspector of Schools to notify the teachers for the awareness of sanitation among the students.

Inspector of Schools J. Brahma said that the teachers have a definite role in maintaining sanitation in the schools. He said that the teachers should teach the students about the sanitation and hygiene in schools.

Additional Chief Engineer Public Health Engineering Department, BTC A Ikram said that the major challenge ahead is to how to dispose of the waste materials and faeces.

Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Nodal Officer Nameswar Tayung said that the weeklong awareness programme is divided into three parts- District level, Block level and VCDC level.

Various programme including distribution of leaflets, postering, cleanliness drive, workshop, essay writing, hand washing, Latrine users operational maintenance, FTK for drinking water testing, Miking, etc. will be held in the week long sanitation awareness.

Among others present were members of NGOs, schools students, Teachers, Assistant Executive Engineers of Kokrajhar, Dotma, Gossaigaon and Parbhotjhora sub-division (PHE), Junior Engineers, PHE staff and SBM (G) cell were present.

An emergency response mock drill was conducted by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) at Habrubari in Kokrajhar district on Friday,which was a part of offsite emergency mock on the IOCL Guwahati-Siliguri underground pipeline to test the preparedness of its emergency personnel.
