Adivasi students protest on wage settlement

Hundreds of activists from All Adivasi Students Association of Assam(AASAA) and Akhil Bharatiya Chah Mazdoor Sangha(ABCMS) staged dharna and burnt effigies of Consultative Committee of the Plantations’ Association (CCPA) and Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha(ACMS) and in protest against the finalised the daily cash wage agreement for the tea garden workers of the Brahmaputra Valley for a period of three years with effect from January 1 this year,today at Lalmati Tea Estate in Kokrajhar.

The activists with placard and banner shouted slogans demanding hike of wage up to Rs. 335 from Rs.95 and CCPA and ACMS has now reached agreement of getting Rs.115 in their working days.The students union and Mazdoor Sangha strongly protested the wage settlement and termed it anti-people agreement from CCPA authority through government policies.

The agitators demanded investigation into agreement on the settlent and held chief advisor of ACMS Pawan Singh Ghatowar, president BN Tanti and general secretary D Tanti and provide proper wagess to the tea estate workers.

Stepen Lakra,vice president of AASAA and Ismail Dhanowar,ABCMs leader protested the agreement and termed it a anti-people step to derail the demands of the tea garden workers.They demanded workers shold be given Rs.335 in their working wages so that they can meet their needs.

The agreement on wages has stated it clearly that in case a minimum wage under the Minimum Wages Act is notified by the Government of Assam, the notified minimum wage will apply prospectively. It further agreed that in computing the minimum wage the value of fringe benefits or the in-kind wages provided to workers shall be taken into consideration as per the law.

According to the agreement, each of the tea garden workers of the Brahmaputra Valley will get Rs 115 as daily wage between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015. Each of them will get Rs 126 per day as wage between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016. Between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017, each of them will get Rs 137 as daily wage.

The terms of this settlement will be given effect from the wage period commencing on or after March 1, 2015 and arrear wages for the applicable period from January 1, 2015 will be paid by June 30, 2015.

Former president of Kokrajhar district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, Binati Bala Basumatary resigned from her party membership on Monday.  Basumatary submitted her resignation letter to the state party president citating personal reason . She was Kokrajhar district BJP president for 2011-2015, who had gained strength of the party through her strong leadership in the district. Basumatary's quit of the party ahead assembly election would draw a set back party strength in the Kokrajhar. Basumatary is likely to join ruling BPF party within couple of days, said a close aid of Binati. 
Three cadres of the NDFB(S) were arrested by security forces in a joint operation belonging to police and army at Hakata village under Barama PS in Baksa district on Sunday. The cadres were identified as Jwangsar Boro @ KK, Mohit Mushahary and Pramod Ramchiary @ Khankari @Raja   of Baksa district. They were actively involved in extortion, arms smuggling and other nefarious and anti national activities and Adivasi carnage in December(2014) and had run away and sheltered themselves in Chennai, till their return. Security forces have intensified their combing operation against militant outfits in the region.  Three link men/over ground worker of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Songbijit faction were apprehended by security forces in a joint operation at Ripu Reserve Forest on Sunday morning in Kokrajhar district. They were identified Sanjib Basumatary, Mirga Basumatary and Charan Basumatary. Over 15 shops along the Fakiragram main Bazar in Lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district have turned into ashes.  The fire damaged worth of nearly 50 lakhs properties following fire in gutted on Friday late night. Various types of shops in the bazar which included medical store,hardware,clothes,grocery,stationary,fruits were completely burnt in the fire that started around 12.45 am in the last night. A businessman was hospitalized after attacked with sharp weapon by miscreants at Champa bazaar area on Friday evening in Kokrajhar district. He was identified as Tamizaddin Anza ri (32) of Mozabari area. He was immediately rushed to Kokrajhar RNB civil hospital and stated to be critical. Details is awaited. 
Salakati police in Kokrajhar district arrested a vehicular thief late last night at Salakati rail track.  He was identified as Naba Das of Belsar in Nalbari district, who was involved with stealing of a four wheeler Mahindra pick up van bearing registration AS-16C-2207. An FIR was registered no.138/16 with Salakati police outpost in this connection, under section (u/s) 457/380/411 IPC.
