An ode to Amrita Pritam

The outstanding contribution of Amrita Pritam came up for a livelier discussion at the Guwahati Lit Fest on Sunday.

Participating in an interaction with author Arupa Patangia Kalita, noted poet and scholar Nirupama Dutt said that the renowned Punjabi poet played a vital role in popularizing the Punjabi literature.    

According to Dutta, Amrita Pritam’s poetry deal with the various issues that have been confronting the people not only in Punjab. She said her poetry deal with the issues of the entire country.

Dutta, who critically appreciated Amrita Pritam’s poetry further responded to a number of questions posed to her by the audience.

Who will replace Ranjit Das

Assam BJP leadership are believed to have been preparing a panel of senior MLAs to be finalized for the post of assembly Speaker in lieu of Ranjit Das who is set to take the rein of the state unit.Senior BJP leaders told Assam Times that they are considering the name of Siddharth Bhattacharya as suitable successor on the floor of the House. Three other names are also under consideration. But it might take a couple of days for the BJP leadership to take a final decision as Das is out of station.

Elephants crushed to death

A moving train in Nagaon district crushed to death  three wild elephants sending huge shockwaves to the animal lovers.The shocking incident took place at Kampur area in the morning when a train rammed into a herd of wild elephants as they came down from a nearby hill in search of food.The local villagers came to see the bodies only in the morning. “ As I was about to wake up I came to hear the horn of train. This was followed the cries of animals. But I could not afford to come out. Former MLA passes away

Senior Congress leader and MLA Membor Gogoi passed away in Jorhat on Saturday. Gogoi, three time MLA from Teok died in the wee hours after prolonged illness. Congress, BJP, AGP leaders along with many local organizations deeply condoled the death of the 85 year old Congress leaders and conveyed their deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

New BJP president in Assam

After months of hectic confabulations the central BJP leadership have appointed senior party leader Ranjit Das as the state unit president of Assam. Dad, who is out of station, is currently the Speaker of the state legislative assembly. Talking to Assam Times senior BJP leaders said that Dutta will resume office as soon as he reaches Guwahati. Then the party would have to propose a legislator to take over as the Speaker.

Uneasy calm in Manipur

Manipur might mire in yet another orgy of violence in near future as the Joint Council of Naga Civil Society has threatened to go to any extent alleging that the governments in state and Centre have disregarded the Naga peace framework. In a statement, the organization questioned the creation of three new districts Kongpokpi, Jiribam and Tengnopol saying that it would stock a massive anger and protest once again. The civil society platform asked the tribal hohos in Manipur to oppose the posting of valley based officers in the hills area and to burn down the Manipuri textbooks in the Naga dominated areas.

Children book released at press club

A collection of adventure stories in Assamese named Kutkut-Tuktukar Abhiyan by journalist-writer Nilotpal Barua was released at Guwahati Press Club on Thursday. Published by Pratishruti Prakashan, the book comprises eight stories, which were earlier published in popular Assamese children monthly ‘Sofura’. The book was officially released by Rupam Barua, editor of Sofura in presence of journalists Nava Thakuria, Bedabrat Bora, Abinash Sharma etc.

This has, beyond doubt, proved again when a group comprising a teacher and students from Guwahati were disallowed from visiting the Taj Mahal recently. Self-defence training for lady scribes

Greater Guwahati Amateur Muaythai Club in association with Guwahati Press Club has organized two-day self-defence training camp for the benefit of lady scribes. The training on self-defence technique will be conducted at the press club premises on the morning hours of 17 & 18 December 2016. The session (for both the days) will start at 9 am and continue till 10.30 am. The training session will be supervised by Jhankar Gogoi, a black belt winner, which will be supported by Ranjita Rabha and Ganesh Kalita. Lady member-journalists of the press club are requested to take part in the camp.

KWS initiative for reducing man-animal conflict

The Kaziranga Wildlife Society will initiate a series of interactive programme with victims of man-animal conflict in the recognised pockets of the conflict all throughout the state.The society that celebrated its foundation day on December 12 at its city office will start the "Save the elephant Campaign" from the 3rd week of December.The starting point will be Numaligarh,a highly depredation area, revealed the secretary of the organization Mubina Akhtar.
