Boost for Onkiya Bhaona

A 45 day long workshop on Aharya of Ankiya Bhaona organised by Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva was inaugurated recently at Ratna Bhavan in Dhing by Bhadrakrishna Goswami, former President of Asom Sattra Mahasabha by lighting traditional lamp. He lauded the path-breaking venture of the Society.

In this workshop, costume making, ornament making, mask making, make-up etc will be taught practically and elaborately by leading experts of Assam.

The objective is that the trainees should set up own workshops for producing these items and thus become self-employed after the training. Unemployed youths from different parts of Assam are being trained. The workshop is sponsored by Sattriya Kendra of Sangeet Natak Akademi.

It is for the first time that such a comprehensive workshop on Aharjya of Ankiya Bhaona is being organised in Assam. In fact this is the first time that any such workshop on Aharya is being organised anywhere in India for any type of drama form. It is thus an epoch making event.

The inauguration of the workshop was addressed by Devananda Deva Goswami, Sattradhikar of Bardowa Narowa Sattra, Dr Ratul Bora, Regsitrar of Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Rajat Ganguli, Director of Sangeet Natak Akademi, North East Centre, and Jadab Mahanta, Deka Sattriya of Bogi Ai Alengi Sattra.

All of them stressed on the importance of preservation of traditional styles in Aharya and lauded the venture of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva.

The inauguration function started with recital of verse from Geeta by eminent singer Ranjan Bezbarua, who sang Sanskrit version of a Bargeet too. The members of Pragati Aharya performed an excerpt of Ram Vijay Bhaona in the event. Kaushiki Saikia performed Gopi Nritya.

 Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, President of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva chaired the function. Mridu Moucham Bora, General Secretary of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva explained the purpose of the meeting at the outset. Pradip Hazarika, the co-ordinator of Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva compered the meeting.

RTI exposes misuse of OBC certificates in Imphal

An RTI activist has revealed misuse of OBC certificates by sons and daughters of some high-ranking Government officials just to sneak into the state Home Department. Stage set for Second phase of Assam Assembly polls on Monday

Assam is all set to go to the second and next phase of assembly polls on Monday. Altogether 96,77,113 voters are set to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of596 candidates --449 men and 47 women who are in the fray for 62 seats. This phase will cover 14 districts namely Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Altogether 50,09,083 voters are male while 46,68,030 others are female. No bandh to oppose PM visit: ULFA

Once again Ulfa springs surprise. In a significant move that gives Congress some sort of relief, the banned outfit has decided not to give bandh call to disrupt the visitofprime minister Manmohan Singh slated for April 7. This was what Ulfa publicity wing leader Arunodoy Dohotiya announced at a statement e-mailed to assamtimes on Tuesday. The announcement further suggests that ULFA will not oppose the visit of Dr Singh on April 11 to cast his vote in Dispur. It may be recalled that for the first time Ulfa has not urged the people not to participate in the poll process.

ULFA shies away, KLNLF votes in Karbi Anglong

Assam records high turnout in first phase of polling

Over 85 per cent voters excercised thier franchize in the first phase of assembly polls in 62 constituencies covering 13 districts on Monday. Amid a mammoth security arrangement, polling began at 7 in the morning in over 11,000 booths which ended as soon as the clock struck at 3 in the afternoon. Cencus 2011 : Indian population increased by 181 million

India now has a population of 1.21 billion according to the latest Census figures released by the Home Secretary and the Registrar General of India on Thursday.
