Rs 34,44,353 for CM’s trip

The state exchequer bore a Rs 34,44,353 expenditure in the name of chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s foreign visit since 2001. Parliamentary affairs minister Nilomoni Sen Deka informed that House on Monday that since his first stint as chief minister, Gogoi made 18 foreign trips.

According to Deka, during the CM's visit to the US, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between The Earth Institute, Columbia University and Assam State Disaster Management Authority. Deka said Gogoi’s first foreign visit was to Indonesia and Singapur.

He has travelled to Canada, UK, Italy, Sri Lanka, US, China, Switzerland, France, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Spain, Belgium, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand. A few other foreign visits was on personal count.

Thaneswar Hazarika, of the Bokakhat Town and the local correspondent of The Sentinel newspaper died on Saturday at his residence following prolonged illness. Born in Majuli, Hazarika was 64 at the time of his demise. Noted educationist, Hazarika retired as the principal-in-charge of JDSG college, Bokakhat. He was associated with various newspapers of Assam including The Assam Tribune, Dainik Asom, The Sentinel, The Eastern Clarion, Natun Dainik etc. He was serving as the president of Bokakhat Press Club at the time of his demise. Assam goes to repolling in thee assembly constituencies.Polling began at 6 booths from 8 in the morning on Monday in Bhawanipur, Rongia and Udalguri districts. Atleast 7 personnel of Manipur Rifles were killed and other 5 wounded on Friday when heavily armed insurgents suspected to be cadres of the NSCN(IM) ambused a convoy of Phungyar MLA Wunaoshang Keishing. MLA Keishing escaped the attack unhurt. The heavily armed insurgents opened fire on the MLA and his convoy while on there way at Rihang, Ukhrul district, Manipur.
