Workshop on handicrafts

A two-day workshop on development of handicraft and languishing craft of Bodoland  was begun from Wednesday at Basic Training Centre, Kokrajhar.

Over two-hundred weavers participated in the workshop which is being organised by Bodoland Regional Apex Weaver & Artisans Cooperative Federation Limited (BRAWFED) in association with Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. An exhibition cum sale of handicrafts was also organised  in connection with workshop where various handicraft products were exhibited.

Former Assam Agriculture Minister and Kokrajhar east MLA Pramila Rani Brahma graced the function as chief guest and inaugurated the workshop by lighting the lamp in the presence of participant,resource person and experts.

Brahma said the handicrafts in Bodoland region has great potential among society.She said that artisans who are expert on various handicrafts should be uplift and make them sustainability so that handicrafts in the region be gained in all aspects.

Partha Borbora,Principal of SIFT,Sualkuchi, Jatin Kalita,associate faculty,IIE,Guwahati, Maitree Das,designer(handicrafts),Guwahati participated as resource persons in the workshop.

NN Rana Patgiri,Managing Director,BRAWFED said that the workshop has been organised to highlight  the potentialities of the handicrafts in Bodoland region.The experst who are attending as resource persons discussed and shared views thoroughly on various aspects of handicrafts including production of decorative eri-silk textiles according to new trend and fashion,improvement of product & productivity of Bodoland handicrafts for creating new opportunities on global trade,use of Bodoland languishing craft for generating employment.

Patgiri said that there about 2.63 lakh artisans of handicrafts in four districts of the council who are working on upliftment of various handicraft works among society.The Brawfed was trying to uplift potentials of the handicrafts in the council region.

Security forces have intensified their combing operation against militant outfits in the region.  Three link men/over ground worker of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Songbijit faction were apprehended by security forces in a joint operation at Ripu Reserve Forest on Sunday morning in Kokrajhar district. Over 15 shops along the Fakiragram main Bazar in Lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district have turned into ashes.  The fire damaged worth of nearly 50 lakhs properties following fire in gutted on Friday late night. A businessman was hospitalized after attacked with sharp weapon by miscreants at Champa bazaar area on Friday evening in Kokrajhar district. In a joint operation launched by the security forces from Assam Police and Army apprehended a cadre of Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) at Salakati village under Kokrajhar PS on Friday.  He was identified as Sonaram Roy of Balagaon area of Kokrajhar district. An emergency response mock drill was conducted by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) at Habrubari in Kokrajhar district on Friday,which was a part of offsite emergency mock on the IOCL Guwahati-Siliguri underground pipeline to test the preparedness of its emergency personnel. A live fire fighting exercise was carried out alongside the drill by Fire and Rescue Services personnel.
