Dokhona in Durga!

A Durga puja pendal in Kokrahar draws no less crowd. But why? What forces thousands of people to visit the particular puja pendal? The striking feature of this puja pendal is the idol of the goddess of strength dressed in traditional Bodo dokhona.   

Organizers told Assam Times that they did it only to draw attention of the people and thereby to promote the Bodo culture and tradition. 

Just before the start of the puja, artists Sanjib Paul and Desharat Paul hoped that traditional Dokhona in this Durga puja would boost the Bodo culture. They said that they were forced to make it on demand by a number of puja organizers in Kokrajhar.

“The idols are dressed with coloured cloths which are designed in traditional phenomenon. But this time the Bodo Dokhona would draw huge crowd. Beside it would entertain the visitors and devotees,” they told Assam Times.

Kokrajhar district alone have over 90 puja pandals this year. Of them, 56 are from Kokrajhar sadar sub-division. These are apart from the puja pandals in Gossaigaon and Parbatjhora sub-divisions.

The Santinagar Sarbajanin Durga Puja committee pins hopes on the crowd with its 63rd year old puja pandal at Santinagar. The Jahnabi Club of Gaurnagar near Circuit House is proud of 49th year old pandal.

Puja organizers have also arranged cultural function from Tuesday night to Friday night on the occasion.

BJP leader quits

Former president of Kokrajhar district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, Binati Bala Basumatary resigned from her party membership on Monday.  Basumatary submitted her resignation letter to the state party president citating personal reason . She was Kokrajhar district BJP president for 2011-2015, who had gained strength of the party through her strong leadership in the district. Basumatary's quit of the party ahead assembly election would draw a set back party strength in the Kokrajhar. Basumatary is likely to join ruling BPF party within couple of days, said a close aid of Binati. 

NDFNB(S) ultras held

Three cadres of the NDFB(S) were arrested by security forces in a joint operation belonging to police and army at Hakata village under Barama PS in Baksa district on Sunday. The cadres were identified as Jwangsar Boro @ KK, Mohit Mushahary and Pramod Ramchiary @ Khankari @Raja   of Baksa district. They were actively involved in extortion, arms smuggling and other nefarious and anti national activities and Adivasi carnage in December(2014) and had run away and sheltered themselves in Chennai, till their return.
