The Army resolved to root out 28 Battalion of ULFA

After a series of attack on the Hindi speaking people and carnage in the different parts of Assam last year allegedly by the cadres of the 28 Battalion the Army deployed in the state under Unified Command Structure with its Chairman Mr. Tarun Gogoi, the Chief Minister of Assam mounted so much far-reaching pressure that some of the hardcore cadres of the Battalion found no other way then to surrender before the Army. In course of time 28 Battalion of the ULFA marginalised and sent to its barracks and that was why the ulfa could not dare to repeat such ghastly incident. An army officer on the condition of anonymity, said to this correspondent while we both were traveling in train recently. But in this connection, however surprising enough that the Army Officers deployed in Karbi Anglong and Civil Administration warned the Hindi speaking people living in scattered area either to leave the District or live together in the relief camp apprehending repeat of earlier incidents which is reported to have been beyond prevention. It is a great mystery for the right thinking people that the Army some time claimed to have rooted out the terrorist belonging to 28 battalion and the other hand in Karbi Anglong the Army people under the same Unified Command were asking the Hindi speaking people to leave the District.

However it must be admitted that there was a time during last year that demanding ransoms against kidnapping and forcefully collecting money by the cadres belonging to 28 Battalion of ULFA and created a dreaded terrors among all section of people. The people spent their life in the grip of adversity even before the sun set. During this crisis period the Army did a commendable job and brought the situation under control. It may be noted that the plan to combat the 28 Battalion of ULFA was made When Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Arunachal this January. But one must keep in mind that combatant has never been the permanent solution of the militancy in the northeast. In order to solve this problem the Government both the state and the centre must have the positive political will.
