Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Curfew relaxed till 8 PM in Golaghat

Life is limping back to normalcy in Golaghat district. Curfew in the violence-hit district was relaxed for further two hours till 8 pm on Saturday following no fresh incident. The prohibitory order imposed on April 20 was relaxed by the district administration for 14 hours from 6 am while it was 12 hours on Friday.  Night curfew from 8 pm to 6 am will, however, continue to be in force. Flood fury takes worse turn

 The flood situation in Dhemaji district has gone from bad to worse on Saturday following the breach of an embankment on the river Jiadhol at Tekjuri. The Brahmaputra and all its tributaries in the district were flowing above the danger level affecting over 3 lakh people. No let-up in Lakhimpur flood

 Lakhimpur district continues to reel under the second wave of flood waters. The situation worsened on Saturday as the water level of the river Subansiri is still on the rise. Yet another person was washed away at Chauldhua village in Lakhimpur on Friday night. With this, the toll has gone up to 3.   The river Subansiri is flowing above the danger level following heavy rainfall forcing more than 1000 families in Lakhimpur district to take shelter in relief camps set up by the district administration. /

Police firing toll goes up to 4

Yet another person died on Saturday three days after he sustained injury in Golaghat police firing.  Identified as Gokul Barik, the 20-year-old daily wage earner succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours at a Guwahati hospital. Baraik was injured in Wednesday's police firing in Golaghat. He was admitted to Jorhat hospital with bullet injury and later referred to Guwahati. With this, the toll in Golaghat police firing has gone up to 4. At least seven organisations, which called an indefinite shutdown of the district to protest the state government's failure to handle the recent violence in the inter-state border, also called off the shutdown on Thursday night. /

AASU on day long hunger strike

AASU leaders and activists across the state were on a day long hunger strike on Saturday demanding the visit of a central team to the violence-hit Assam-Nagaland border areas. The 12 hour-long hunger strike began at 6 in the morning in all district and sub divisional headquarters and ended at 6 in the evening. Other demands include proper rehabilitation of the affected families in Uriamghar, replacement of CRPF currently on duty from the interstate border, deployment of Assam police for strict vigil and shifting of top administrative officials.         

Gogoi for CBI probe into border flare up

The Assam government will seek a CBI probe into the recent Assam-Nagaland border flare to unearth the truth.   Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced it when he met a delegation of 13 organizations in Guwahati on Friday evening. But, he said, the first priority would be to restore peace in the affected areas. He further said that the displaced people wuld be send back to their homes soon. Dispur would soon move the Supreme Court for early settlement of the vexed border issue. Violence: VK Singh contradicts Gogoi

DoNER minister Gen VK Singh contradicts Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on the reasons behind the border dispute with Nagaland. Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Friday, Singh said that infrastructure has nothing to do with border dispute between two states. He told it a day after in his address at the North East Chief Ministers’ Meeting in Guwahati, Gogoi blamed lack of infrastructure as one of the major issues for border disputes.
