Dilemma for Bodo voters

Many voters in Bodo belts are likely to face hardship in reading the name of the candidates when they come to exercise their franchise on April 24 in the third phase election in the state. The EVM machines have candidates name written only Assamese language apart from the symbol of the respective candidates.

“It is very unfortunate that the EVM machines did not have Bodo language to identify the candidates where it is in the 8th scheduled and one of the associate official languages in Assam. How would a voters coming from Bodo medium or non-Assamese medium background who cannot read and write Assamese identify the candidates name”, said a local intellectual in Kokrajhar.

‘Voters should have prior knowledge about their candidates’ names and symbols while exercising their franchise, he said. The Bodo language is included as the 8th scheduled language in the constitution of India and one of the associate official languages of Assam, so the Bodo language should have been given equal importance for the benefits for the voters in Bodoland region.

Bodo Sahitya Sabha General Secretary, Kamala Kanta Muchahary criticize the government for step motherly attitude towards the Bodo language saying the Bodo language is still discriminated by the government though it is associate official language of Assam and one of the 8th scheduled languages.

He said that BTC administration and Bodo representatives in the state Assembly and parliament have not taken initiative to include the Bodo language in the voters list and EVM machines like Assamese.

“It’s a shame that the Bodo language is not being used in the Bodo dominated areas by the government”, he rued.

He said that Bodo voters coming from Bodo or non Assamese medium background will have hardtime identifying the names of the candidates while exercising their franchise.

Muchahary also said that the government is trying to sabotage the Bodo voters by not using the Bodo language in voters list and EVM machines.  He has also urged the BTC administration, Bodo MLAs and MPs to take initiative to include the Bodo language in voters list and EVM machines.

Menwhile, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Nitin Khade said that there are 10 to 15 languages in Assam. He also said that it was the direction of the Election Commission of India as per rule of the law.

BTAD Economic & Statistics and Labour & Employment offices to get new building

BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary laid foundation stones of Directorate of the Economic & Statistics and Directorate of Labour & Employment office at Baghichagaon, Kokrajhar  on Wednesday.  The Economic & Statistics office would be constructed at a cost of one crore under 2016-17 financial year while the Labour & Employment office building would be constructed amounting of 1.42 crores under 2016-17 BTC financial year.  BTC deputy chief Kampa Borgoyary, former minister and MLA Chandan Brahma, BTC executive members Rajib Brahma, Ganesh Kochary were among others present on the function. 

Bodoland Day celebration today

Preparations to holding the 14th Bodoland Day on Wednesday on the historic Bodo Accord day celebration have so far completed at Bodofa Nwgwr, near BTC secretariat in Kokrajhar.  The celebration will begin with hoist of national tri colour flag in the morning following homage to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma in front of BTC Secretariat.  Amit Shah, president of BJP party would grace as chief guest to mark the celebration a grand step of fourteen years of Bodo Accord.  BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary would address the celebration which will mark a grand gathering in the council.  The BTC was created through tripartite peace agreement on February 10,2003.

NDFB-S link man arrested

Security forces belonging to Police, Army and CRPF apprehended a link man of the NDFB-S in a joint operation at Shantipur area under Kachugaon PS in Kokrajhar district today. Getting information about the working of link man of the militant outfit, security forces conducted an operation in the area and able to arrest a link man, who has been working for the militant outfit organization since long years.  The arrested was identified as Biswajit Basumatary alias Bishop.  A country made riffle, five bullets was recovered from him. 

NDFB-S section commander killed in encounter

A senior second section commander of NDFB (Songbijit faction) was killed in an encounter with security forces at Ranipur area under Runikhata police station of Assam's Chirang district early this morning.  Based on a tiptop information about presence of militants, a joint team of Assam police and 7 Sikh Light Infantry launched an operation at Ranipur area since late night where an exchange of gun fire was held by 3 am early this morning and a senior section commander of NDFB-S was killed on the spot.
