Tarun Gogoi dead

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is dead. He passed away in the evening at Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment of post COVID complications.

His condition deteriorated on Saturday as his organs did not properly respond to the line of treatment.

Mother, son died in electrocution

A woman and her son lost their lives when a storm lashed the city of Guwahati on Saturday night. The tragic incident took place at Dhirenpara area when a minor boy died in electrocution after high voltage powerlines collapsed in the storm. When his mother tried to rescue her 12 year old son she also died in electrocution. Amid shock and anger, local residents blamed the power department for lack of maintenance which was why the powerlines collapsed in the storm.

The Dispur police have arrested Juel Garlosa hours after the former DHD(J) top leader turned politician met governor PB Acharya along with senior BJP leaders to stake claims for forming the Dima Hasao autonomous council.A team of Dispur police station arrived in the residence of Garlosa and arrested the elected member of the autonomous council in the wee hours in connection with a case pending against him with the Lenting police station. Notably, Garlosa was among other BJP leaders who met governor PB Acharya and staked claims to form the Dima Hasao autonomous council saying that he along with a few others have joined BJP where Congress has reduced to minority.      ...

Cong lashes out at BJP

After allowing two autonomous councils to go out of their hands Congress accused BJP of resorting to horse trading. Congress president Anjan Dutta told reporters in Guwahati on Saturday that the four executive members of the Dima Hasao autonomous council have left the party not going by the peoples’ wish. “They did it only money and power. I say it is unfortunate,” said Dutta.Later senior Congress leader Ripun Bora said, “BJP is teaming with former militants which talks of high morality.” The ruling Congress is set to lose the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council. BJP moved the Assam governor PB Acharya staking claims to form the council saying that they have numbers.

Beware of beef politics: Gogoi

Apprehending outbreak of a volatile situation over the beef controversy chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday urged the people to go all out against the dirty politics to monger trouble in the state.In a statement Gogoi accused some “fringe groups” of the BJP of trying to foment trouble by importing the beef controversy and to extract political mileage thereof. He said, “the government is maintaining a close vigil over the situation and timely intervention of the government machinery prevented the situation from snowballing into chaos.”  

Second Assam agitation in offing!

A second Assam agitation is on the threshold if the All Assam Students Union leaders are to be believed. AASU leaders on Saturday disclosed their preparedness to launch a massive movement to stop Centre from making Assam a dumping ground of immigrants. Participating in Gana Satyagrah programme in Barpeta AASU advisor Dr Sammujjal Bhattacharjya said that the second Assam agitation is imminent and that that is the best possible way to deal with the Centre who is trying to make Assam a safe haven for the Bangladeshi immigrants. “But we are not anti-Muslim and not anti Bengalis. We oppose Bangladeshi immigrants,” said the AASU leader.

Gogoi slams Modi on Dadri incident

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi lambasted Narendra Modi on Friday allegedly that the Prime Minister has been maintaining a stoic silence on the Dadri incident where a 50 year old man was pu t death amid speculation of keeping beef for consumption. In a statement issued in Guwahati, Gogoi said Modi’s silence is stoic which threatened to create a rift in society on communal lines. He said, “ the President who rarely intervenes had to step in to douse the flames that threatened to suck the country into the vortex of communal cauldron." Gogoi asserted.
