Guwahati: A huge amount of unrealised loan money to the tune of almost Rs 864 crores under PMRY has forced the banks to get tough with the defaulters.
According to official information, as many as 18,517 beneficiaries out of 22,730 have yet to repay the loan amounting Rs 864 crores which they received under the Prime Minister's Rojgar Yojana from 1992 to December, 2006.
Sources say the matter has already reached the Prime Minister's Office and the Reserve Bank of India is getting ready to take stern action against the defaulters as soon as necessary permission is received. Also a committee is studying the case and the report is expected by April, 2008.
Notably, the scheme for the unemployed youths was introduced in 1991 by the then Prime Minister P V Narasihma Rao. The beneficiaries were selected by a committee consisting of the members of district industries centres, district administration and banks.
