With her disarming smile simple down to earth and smiling manner the bespectacled Dr. Audrey Cantlie welcomes you with a big smile at her door at Oxford street as if somebody of her own. She has an emotional bond for Assam and the Assamese people.
I still remember the day I met her sometime in September, 1998 at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies, London) I introduce myself as an Assamese I could see the sparkle in her eyes: said to me "How many Assamese people are in London? I love to meet them". Dr. Audrey Cantlie was born in Shillong in 1923. She spent her six years in Jorhat where her father was Deputy Commissioner. So, in some ways she consider herself a daughter of Assam.
After taking a degree in Sociology at the London School of Economics, she returned to Assam for fieldwork and carried out a study of a village near Jorhat, which was later published under the title of ‘The Assamese’. It is perhaps the only intensive work done in the plains of Assam and I like to think of it as a small contribution to understanding a unique way of life and, more particularly, the religion founded by Sankardeva.
After working on the staff at the London School of Economics. She moved to the School of Oriental and African Studies where I still teach part-time to the present day.
Few weeks after we have organized the 550th Sankar Jayanti at Wembley when we invited her as our chief guest. The speech she delivered about Sankardev was so informative. Since then Dr. Cantlie always shares every Assamese Community function in London. Her guidance and support is very valuable to me at my work in a women oriented matter.
From studying, Sociology at the London School of Economics and to teach at (School of Oriental and African Studies. Her beautiful past as an Assamese is still in her mind. She wrote “The Assamese” dedicated to the memory of her father Sir Keith Cantlie who served 40 years in the state of Assam. How beautifully she expressed the qualities of Assamese people in this book.
Call her a professor, teacher, academician for rest of our Assamese society in London she is just our “Cantlie baidew”
During her stay at Guwahati, we have organised an interactive session with teachers, academicians, journalists and students at Sudmersen Hall, Cotton College on Wednesday 13 February, 2008 at 4:00pm.

I am from BANI MANDIR, a publication house from Assam since 1949. Many people want to buy this book, but due to the price 99% people cannot effort. If I get the publication right I can reprint the in Indian cheaper price and most of the people can buy and can preserve the book. I tried with the author but could not contact. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday asked police to nab the culprits in the Guwahati molestation case within the next 48 hours. But out of 12 identified police have so far arrested only 4 miscreants. That too five days after the shocking incident that brews widespread acrimony. Chief Minister Gogoi on Friday evening appointed a Special Task Force to look into the matter. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women formed a three-member team which is in Guwahati to conduct a probe.
A Bihu troupe from Assam will dazzle in London Olympics. A 16-member troupe will be performing Bihu during the Indian campaign for the London Olympics on August 1 and 2 at Royal Festival Hall, South Bank Centre in London. Led by Bihu exponent Ranjeet Gogoi, the team will lead the trip on July 25. Also, the creations of Utpal Baruah, an associate professor in the department of design at IIT, Guwahati, will be exhibited at the ‘Olympic Fine Arts-2012’ to be held in London for the visitors during the Olympics.

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi on Saturday targeted a satellite TV news channel alleging that a reporter of the channel was actively involved on the Guwahati molestation incident. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, the RTI activist said that the entire incident was planned by a group of miscreants involving NewsLive reporter Gauravjyoti Neog. KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi on Friday demands President’s Rule in Assam to bail out the state from the worsening law and order situation. Talking to reporters, Gogoi said that Guwahati is teeming with lumpen elements and criminals where the people have no safety and security. He further demanded a CBI probe into the incident saying that the incident suggests total collapse of law and order in the state. He further claimed that the DGP is aware of the whereabouts of the criminals ad that he can’t take action in face of pressure from the government. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday asked Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to strictly deal with the perpetrators in the Guwahati molestation case. Talking to reporters in Chandigarh, Chidambaram strongly condemned the brutal molestation of a girl in Guwahati. Police have arrested one more youth in connection with the recent molestation case on the GS Road. Operation is on to nab 8 others culprits who outraged the modesty of a teen aged girl in full view of a crowd on Monday. Three suspected NDFB cadres were gunned down during an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district on Friday. According to police, the encounter took place during an operation in Salpara around in the wee hours. In the retaliatory firing, three cadres were killed, while the rest two managed to escape. An AK-56 rifle, a 9mm pistol, a Chinese grenade and over 100 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the spot.
A woman died of electrocution when she was trying to charge her mobile phone in Kamrup (Rural) district on Friday. The incident took place in the morning in Pitambar Hat Bajali village, when the woman jolted as she put the mobile charger to the switch and fell unconscious in her house of the district. Identifiedas Lalita Kumar, she was rushed to the Rangiya Civil Hospital hospital where she was declared brought dead.
