Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

Assam bandh disrupts normalcy

GUWAHATI:Normal lives in many parts remains heavily disrupted when a few tribal bodies enforced a 12 hour statewide bandh on Tuesday raising a slew of demands. Roads remained deserted as vehicles are not plying. Schools and colleges, shops and markets, banks and offices have remained closed under impact of the bandh. Rio proving majority on the floor

KOHIMA: The NDPP-led Nagaland government is facing floor test in the special assembly session on Tuesday a week after Neiphu Rio along with 11 others were sworn in. Before that  the new members of the House will take oath and affirmation from the pro tem Speaker and the new Speaker would be elected on Wednesday.  Governor PB Acharya had earlier asked the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to prove his majority on the floor of the House by March 15. The newly formed Progressive Democratic Alliance Government has 18 NDPP, 12 BJP, 1 JD(U) and 1 Independent MLAs. After a recess of eight days the session will resume on  March 22.

NIA summons to Zeliang strike controversy

KOHIMA: An NIA letter to TR Zeliang triggers no less controversy across Nagaland on Monday just a day before the NDPP-led coalition government's floor test. Assam tables first e budget

GUWAHATI: For the first time in the history of Assam, the state government tabled an e-budget for 2018-19 in the assembly on Monday. Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tabled the budget, doling out many promises a couple of months before the state rural body polls. In his speech presenting the Rs 2149.04 cr deficit budget, Sarma promised three new bridges over the Brahmaputra apart from three more medical colleges not to speak of the 5,000 HS toppers who would get scooty in this fiscal. Sarma further proposed 10 law colleges in addition to 9 women law colleges and 10 B.ED colleges. Centre steps in to the restore border normalcy

RIMA VUSHUM AIAZWL: Finally the Centre steps in to mend the widening differences between Assam and Mizoram amid an escalating tension along the inter state border. The home ministry has asked both the north eastern state to ensure peace along the border area a week after a group of Mizo students clashed with Assam Police. In an order, the Centre has asked for reports from both Dispur and Aiazwl detailing about the incidents along woit the measures to defuse the tension.   Both the states have put in place a mammoth security along the border to avert any clash in the area.

Dreaded NDFB-S rebel surrenders

Kokrajhar: In a major setback for NDFB-S, a Myanmar trained rebel of the outfit has surrendered before the authorities on Sunday. Identified as Rindao Brahma alias B Ringhav alias Mejem, the self styled Lance Corporal laid down his arms before Serfanguri police in Kokrajhar in the morning who hailed from Ramfalbil Kapurgaon village. He said he was a cadre of 42nd batch of the outfit who was trained up in Myanmar after he join in 2014. Ringhav further said he received guerrilla training in Myanmar for three months. Himanta presenting first state e-budget

GUWAHATI: The stage is set to table the Assam state budget for 2018-19. Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is tabling the budget at 10-30 in the morning on Monday.   Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, Sarma said this year’s budget has some marked differences in terms of presentations and allocations of funds under the various heads.   

Traffic snarl along Assam-Mizoram border!

Nagaland Cong chief resigns

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Congress president Kewekhape Therie has resigned owning moral responsibility for the party’s poll debacle triggering a huge crises inside the grand old party in the north eastern state.    Therie sent his resignation to the high command a couple of days after he himself faced defeat and his party failed to open an account in the assembly polls in a state where the party ruled for more than two decades.    Talking to www.assamtimes,org, Therie said he put in his papers and it was for the NPCC to take up the issue with the party’s central leadership.
