Assam celebrated Silpi Divas across the state to commemorate the death anniversary of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla on Friday. Cultural functions, Jyoti Sangeet competitions and seminars were organized in many places to mark the occasion. The central function at took place in Tezpur, the birthplace of the first Assamese film maker.

A heavy downpour in Guwahati wreaked no less havoc with massive logging disrupting normal life many parts of the principal city in the north eastern region. Many areas in Nabin Nagar, Lachit Nagar, Anil Nagar, Chandmari, Zoo Road have come under the rainwaters three days after the massive woes. Flood waters refuse to recede in Assam in view of the incessant rains that lashed the state during the last couple of days rendering almost two lakh people. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger level where the surging waters have submerged more and more areas in Lakhimpur, Jorhar, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Kamrup, Sonitpur district forcing the people to take shelter in the highland areas. A rising water level of the mighty river Bramhaputra wreaked no ness havoc in Barpeta in the form of flood where Bhogerpar and its adjoining areas have come under the surging waters. These areas with a considerable population have been remaining under water for the last 5 days. The situation is taking a grim turn as the water level refuses to recede. Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) activists in different parts of Assam blocked rails on Friday opposing the Centre’s move to auction 12 marginal oilfields disrupting normal train services.With banners and festoons hundreds of protesters blocked the rails in Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Margherita, Digboi, Jorhat and Golaghat raising slogans asking the Centre not to proceed with the deal.The protesters further asked the Centre to roll back the move within 24 hours.
