An awareness programme on avenue for woman economic empowerment held at Tangla on September 21. The programme which was held at RC Saharia Memorial Teachers Training College hall,Tangla was organised by social worker Dr.Dipankar Saharia in association with State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD). More than three hundred woman representatives from 120 nos SHG covering 40 villages took part in the day long programme. Social Worker Kamakhya Barman in his welcome speech introduced all the guests to the people present after plantation of a few orange saplings in the college campus.
Inaugurating the programme, social worker and former civil service officer Dr.Dipankar Saharia (son of former Assam home and education minister late Ramesh Ch. Saharia) remarked that nearly eighty percent people living in the villages depend on agriculture. It was really difficult to make any progress without giving importance to agriculture sector. According to him traditional approach to agriculture in Assam could not help villagers. He strongly suggested market oriented approach in agriculture production in Assam. He also stressed the need for creating work culture among people of Assam with more and more participation of woman. Dr.Saharia suggested a few methods to enhance production. In this regard he mentioned cultivation of banana,orange,lemon or bamboo etc. He also spoke on recent Food Security Bill.
Anupam Dutta,Officer in-charge,Extension Centre, SIRD, Bezera attending the session as a resource person explained on the role and functioning of SIRD in promoting methods suitable for rural people specially for woman. He requested woman to take up projects like tailoring, beautician etc suitable for modern times. Dr.Kabyajyoti Bora spoke on animal and bird keeping by village woman for self sufficiency. According to him Bonaraja species of birds were most suitable for Assam climate which are disease resistant and easy to keep at home. Jayanta Saharia, Project Asstt. SIRD explained about the role of village woman in promoting economic up liftment of woman. He advised woman not to depend on their husband,sons or daughters even in later ages but to earn their own for self dependency.
Senior journalist Jayanta Kumar Das presided over the session which was also attended by journalists Bapan Sarma,Diganta Kumar Sarma,Ujjal Das,Nabajyoti Barua etc. More than five hundred orange and lemon saplings were distributed among the woman at the end.
Yet another chit fund company has gone missing from Guwahati. The officials of Euro Group of officials have been remaining incommunicado for the last five days leaving the depositors in the lurch. The Kolkata based company has deposite of crores of rupees for industrial development. The Guwahati-based officials went untraced as soon as West Best-Bengal police sealed the Euro Group offices in the state.
One person died and ten others have been injured when a herd of wild elephant unleashed terror in Golaghat district on Sunday. The incident took place at Telgorom area in Numoligarh where a herd of wild elephant which came down from Kaziranga in search of food attacked the families. One person was trampled to death while ten others have been injured. Over 20 huts have been destroyed during the 3 hour long reign of terror. Later forest officials dispersed the elephants.
Three villagers died and twenty others have been injured when security forces sprang upon a group of people who prevented the PowerGrid authority from erecting a wall in Biswanath chariali on Tuesday. The incident took place at Baghmari at 5.30 in the morning when local people came out to the street opposing the wall erected secretly on Monday. Security forces opened fire at the protesters where one died on the spot and two others died on the way to the hospital. Angry mob later burnt down 4 police vehicles. Top ranked police and civil officials have arrived in the spot to contain the situation.
An unclaimed explosion has again proved the futility of the heavy presence of security forces. That too just near the Chandmari police station. The explosion took place on Monday evening with a huge sound. There was no report of any casualty. Police claimed to have found some local explosive in the bomb. No one has so far been arrested. Police havenot denied ULFA's hand in it to make presence felt. Investigation is on.
A CBI team is set to land in Guwahati on Tuesday to take up the allegations against a few chit fund companies. The team would properly screen the cases in consultation with the CID officials and only a few critical cases would be taken up for investigation. CBI agreed to probe a few cases against Saradha group, Rose Valley, Jeevan Surakshya who have looted crores of rupees by chit fund.
Curfew has been imposed in Malaipathar in Goalpara district amid tension after two persons were killed this morning when the police opened fire to control a 3000-strong mob on the rampage.Seven protesters have been injured in the firing. Eight cops are also hurt. Police had to open fire to control a crowd that went berserk after the body of a 50-year-old cowherd, who was missing since Sunday, was found this morning in the Mailapathar area.
Assam Police have published a list of 11 similar companies that have been collecting money by illegal means and warned people against investing money with them. The list however did not name Saradha Group, against which the police have already registered four cases. One of the two separate notices issued by the Bureau of Investigation of Economic Offences.
A hardcore ULFA militant surrendered before the superintendent of police in Jorhat district on Monday.Identified as Jagat Bhuyan alias Madan, he surrendered before Sanjukta Parashar with a M-20 rifle, seven rounds of ammunition and two Chinese made bottle grenades. He had joined the outfit in 2009.
An Assam police team has gripped Sudipta Sen in Kolkata on Sunday after the Saradha Group boss was remanded to the West Bengal police custody.He was grilled in the cases of fraud and forgery lodged against him in the state. Two of the cases were registered in Dispur and one each in Geetanagar and Paltan Bazar.
