Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) has expressed shock at the killing of Chhattisgarh based journalist Sai Reddy, who according to media report, was killed by Maoist activist on Friday last. Reddy (51), a native of Basaguda village in Naxalite-hit Bijapur district of south Chhattisgarh, used to write for Deshbandhu newspaper of the State. NDFB's Ranjan Daimari faction struck a ceasefire pact with the Centre on Friday which is believed to be of great help to restore peace in BTAD. Union joint home secretary Sambhu Singh represented the Centre in the tripartite in Guwahati where NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary was present. A brain storming meet of police heads from 14 districts chalked out a slew of strategies to counter the growing militant activities in these districts. Presiding over the meeting at Assam police Headquarters on Thursday, DGP JN Chaudhury asked the SPs and IGs and DIGs to sternly deal with the fanning militant forces in the state. The minor boy critically injured in the Bongaigaon blast died in Guwahati on Wednesday. The three year old boy died three days after he was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. The minor boy was critically wounded in Bongaigaon on Sunday as he was on the way to attend the Raas festival in the evening along with his parents. Suspected NDFB-B exploded the powerful grenade in the town leaving 10 injured.
Three more people of a family were killed in the name of witch hunt. The incident took place at Rangalibasti area five days ago. The bodies of the Karbi family were recovered on Tuesday night four days after they went missing. The incident came to light after one of the family members found them traceless. He approached police alleging that on several earlier occassions a section of the villagers inflicted inhuman torture suspecting witch craft. Police arrested three persons in this connection and acting on their confessional statement police dug up the bodies from a jungle.
Despite stepped up security measures, Golaghat town has turned into a den of criminals. In a sensational incident, a gang of dacoits looted the Digambor Jain temple after killing the securityman on Tuesday. The incident took place on Wednesday wee hours when the dacoits attacked Parasuram Goala as he was trying to them from entering into the temple at Chandan Nagar. Goala died on the spot before the dacoits looted the temple. Golaghat police have detained 3 persons in this connection.
