Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. The armed conflict between KPLT and Rengma militants seems to have reached its worse turn. Amid simmering tension suspected Rengma militants shot dead a Karbi youth on Staurday forcing the authorities to clamp curfew from evening to morning. The incident took place in Bokajan in the evening when 5 armed youths started indiscriminate firing in a village leaving a 22 year Karbi youth killed. Then they left towards Dimapur. Police men rushed to the spot and operation is underway. The incident took place a day after Dimapur police recovered 9 decomposed bodies. One of the bodies was identified as a Karbi boy who was missing for the last couple of days.
Assam government has deferred the function scheduled to be held in Guwahation Wednesday to falicitate Gunjan Sarma. The decision was finalised after the brave girl met with a roadmishap in Kaziranga on Tuesday night on her way to Guwahati where she was scheduled to receive the bravery award at a function from chief minister. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi visited Gunjan on Wednesday morning at the JMCH where she is undergoing treatment. Gogoi further asked the hospital authority to provide her with best treatment to ensure recovery at an earlier date. He announced free treatment for Gunjan Sarma.
An eerie silence grips Karbi Anglong following the counter insurgency operation in the hills district.A fierce gunbattle struck the district a day after the dreaded encounter between police and KPLT insurgents. The counter insurgency operation took place at Taralangsu when the armed KPLT ministers arrived in the village to set some houses on fire.High level police officials led by IGP AP Rawat is camping in Bokajan to monitor the operation. The incident took place two days after 7 people including 4 KPLT militants died in firing.
A ravaging fire claimed the lives of three persons of a family in Bongaigaon on Sunday. The tragic incident took place at Bhaulaguri when a house caught fire in the wee hours. Two including a women and a minor girl died on the spot while two others are battling for life at the GMCH. The reason is yet to be ascertained.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi asserted that Narendra Modi will have hardly any impact in the next Lok Sabha polls in Assam.Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function in Guwahati on Sunday, Gogoi said that the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate has little contribution for the state and that he and his party have nothing to be worried. He further said that AGP is never a factor for the Congress in the general elections.Notably Gogoi on Saturday called Modi a challenge for the ruling party and in the same breath, he told media that his party would be able to put up a good performance in the Lok Sabha polls.
After Jorhat and Lakhimpur, yet another rhino pressed panic button in a tiny hamlet in Kaziranga. A local villager sustained injury when a wanton rhino attacked him near the national park. The incident took place at Lakhipur village when the rhino suddenly attacked the local resident was in his paddy field early in the morning. The villager was shifted to the hospital. Then the one horn animal targeted a gipsy on the road. But the driver managed to escape from the vehicle. The vehicle was partially damaged.

The third EMFA media awards 2012 has been postponed to April next year, which will be organised with the fourth annual EMFA awards. The Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) has also asked the television journalists of the State to submit their entries for 4th EMFA Awards 2013 by January 31 next. Amid total bandh over the Indo-Bangla boundary ratification pact, chief minister Tarun Gogoi asserted that the deal would help the state gain a considerable area of land---now in adverse possession. Talking to reporters in Dispur, he said that the area the state would gain would be more that what Bangladesh is set to get which is why, the opposition party in the neighbouring country is dead opposed to it. Gogoi said that the BJP leaders knew it very well in Delhi and have not opposed it.
Process begins across the state to update NRC. This was what chief minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in Dispur on Friday. Gogoi said that altogether 1000 camps would be set up initially for the 36 month long exercise. According to Gogoi, the papers would reach the citizens by December next year.
