Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Finally chief minister Tarun Gogoi put in his papers when he met Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday.           After holding a series of crucial meetings with Rahul Gandhi, Dr CP Joshi and Ahmed Patel, Gogoi meet the party president and tendered his resignation owning moral responsiblity for the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha.          The senior Congress leaders asked Gogoi not to resign.
Congress high command is aware of the paralyzing dissident activities in the time of polls.     According to top sources, senior Congress leaders are convinced of the dissident activities that paralyzed the party's poll prospects.            The party high command is set to give Gogoi a free hand to firmly deal with the dissidents.
Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has asked Chief minister Tarun Gogoi not to quit for poll debacle.        According to AICC sources, during  Gandhi's telephonic conversation, he asked Gogoi that the resignation won't help the party.               On the other hand, Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel and AICC general secretary Dr CP Joshi categorically asked Gogoi not to proceed with this step.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is all set to seek Sonia Gandhi's permission to quit a week after poll debacle.               But AICC sources told Assam Times that the Congress president is unlikely to accept the move.                Talking to reporters on Wednesday evening at the Assam Bhawan premises he confimed his decision.              Three of his trusted cabinet colleagues Pradyut Bordoloi, Rockybul Hussain, Nilomoni Sendeka and Anjan Dutta are set to call on Gandhi to urge her not to accept the move.                On the other...
An earthquake of moderate intensity jolted Assam and parts of eastern region on Wednesday.   The earthquake measuring 6.5 in the Rickhter scale was felt at 9.55 at night spreding panic among the people.                As the quake originated on the bay of Bengal struck, a section of the people came out to the street fearing a devastating turn.
The death toll in the Dhupdhora truck-winger collision has gone up to 11. Eight people including Singer Sumanta Mahanta died on the spot. The others succumbed to their injuries after they were rushed to the hospital. The incident took place at Dhupdhora on the National Highway when the Guwahati bound winger carrying a 15 member cultural troup collided its head on a speeding truck which later managed to flee from the spot.
At least nine people were killed and five others sustained serious injury when a truck collided its head on a winger in Goalpara district on Wednesday. The tragic mishap took place at Dhupdhara at 5.30 in the morning on the National Highway where the 15 seater vehicle carrying a cultural troup from a function at Matia. Eight people include singer Sumanta Mahanta died on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. The truck managed to flee from the spot. Local residents in large number came to the rescue and rushed the injured to the hospital.
Hours after Tarun Gogoi left for New Delhi to apprise Sonia Gandhi of the post poll situation, the dissident MLAs and ministers met in Dispur on Tuesday.Led by health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, 37 MLAs thronged at a dinner session in Dispur where they discussed their strategies, most probably, for leadership change.         
Stunned by the Lok Sabha poll debacle Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is set to apprise Sonia Gandhi of his preparedness to quit the office on Wednesday.Gogoi is set to call on Sonia Gandhi on Thursday  to seek her permission to resign. Forest guards gunned down one poacher while trying to escape at KNP. Guards also recovered a rhino horn from the slain poacher. Poachers killed a rhino in the eany morning. This is the 18th rhino killed this year.
