Huge arms and ammunition seized

A huge amount of arms and ammunitions were seized and three persons were arrested on Thursday morning from Inter State Bus Terminal in Guwahati. In a joint operation by city police and SP operations the said arms seized on its way for the GNLA militants. The arms and ammunition include one AK 56 rifle, one magazine, 375 rounds of ammunition, one short barrel factory made gun, Rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, seven RPG cells, four mobile sets and Rs 50 thousand in cash.

The three arrested with the consignment which was send from Dimapur in courier to be delivered in Guwahati were identified as Jamir Marat, Arbit Sangma and Mohammad Zahid Hussain.

Addressing a press conference central western range of Assam Police L R Bishnoi said that all the three along with the consignment has been caught this morning at the ISBT while they were trying to receive the delivery.

“This was supposed to be sent for the GNLA militant. Jamir Marat and Arbit Sangma are suspected to be the linkman of GNLA from Garo Hills in Meghalaya while Zahid Hussain is a local who was helping them for which he would have got Rs 50 thousand,” Bishnoi said.

In the year 2013 so far this is the second incident of against GNLA. The first incident took place on February 6 when two GNLA militant were gunned down by security personnel. While, since March 1, 2012 police has seized arms and ammunition for six times which were being supplied from Dimapur.

“Earlier, they used to transport the arms in rented vehicles but when we caught their way, they have changed and adopted a new way of sending in courier,” he added.

So far since 2012, altogether five AK 56 rifles, one sub machine gun, two HK 33, 9mm pistols, grenades, 1687 rounds of ammunition, 32 RPG cells and others have been seized. Since the same period of time altogether 17 people, 6 vehicles and 16 mobiles have also been nabbed in this regard.
