Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Noted educationist, journalist Thaneswar Hazarika passes away

Thaneswar Hazarika, of the Bokakhat Town and the local correspondent of The Sentinel newspaper died on Saturday at his residence following prolonged illness. Born in Majuli, Hazarika was 64 at the time of his demise. Noted educationist, Hazarika retired as the principal-in-charge of JDSG college, Bokakhat. He was associated with various newspapers of Assam including The Assam Tribune, Dainik Asom, The Sentinel, The Eastern Clarion, Natun Dainik etc. He was serving as the president of Bokakhat Press Club at the time of his demise. Highly admired by the people of Bokakhat, Hazarika leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son, besides a host of relatives.

Woman injured in police action in Imphal

Manipur police fired tear gas cells and lathi charged at the members of the JAC of Street Vendors, who were trying to take out a rally at Khwairanband Bazar at the heart of Imphal city on Friday, injuring one woman. A combined team of Imphal West commandos and personnel of 43 Assam Rifles on Friday busted a hideout of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) faction of Lamyanba Khuman and apprehended a hardcore cadre of the group after an encounter at Loupakthabi under Sekmai police station in Imphal West.
