Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Two youths bring pride for the state after they scaled the Mount Everest on Saturday.The first North East Indian Mount Everest expedition has scaled the final summit for Mt. Everest from the Everest Base camp. The team comprising 22 members from the region ensured the landmark victory at 5-30 in morning.The North Eastern Council and the Manipur Government sponsored the team consisting entirely of climbers from the region have Tarun Saikia and Manish Kumar Deka from Assam. The team reached Camp-III on May 15 which is located 24,000 feet above the sea level. Another Maoist held in Guwahati

Guwahati police have arrested a Maoist activist in the city on Saturday. Known as Prasanna Rabha, the youth was picked up from Udalbarka during a combing operation in the area four days after his sister was arrested. Police claimed him to be close associate of central committee member Aklanta Rabha who was arrested last month.

Ijaz tops HSLC exam as SEBA announces results

The Board of Secondary Education announced the results of the High School Leaving Certificate and the Assam High Madrassa Examinations on Friday. Altogether 2,59,149 candidates emerged successful out of 3,66,476. The percentage of successful candidates stands at 70.71%.Ijaz Ahmed from Pathshala Shiksha Pith in Barpeta tops the HSLC examinations. Cyclone alert across Assam

Its high alert across the state as cyclone Mahasen is likely to hit the north-eastern states during the next 12 hours. Areas near the Brahmaputra are on high alert and have been closed for the next 2 days and fishermen have been restricted in these areas. Control rooms have been set up in several district headquarters to help the victims if required. The storm surfaced over the Andaman and Nicobar islands on May 10 and was moving in north-west direction but on May 14.

HSLC/ AHM results on Friday

Decks are clear for Board of Secondary Education, Assam to announce the results of the High School Leaving Certificate and the Assam High Madrassa Examinations on Friday.The results will be available to the respective schools around 12 noon. The centres would be able to collect the results from Inspectors of Schools. Results are being dispatched in sealed covers to all the district headquarters. Female Maoist cadre held in Guwahati

Maoist activists are spreading in the nook and corner of Guwahati. Jalukbari police on Thursday claimed to have intercepted a lady Maoist cadre in the city in the wee hours. Identified as Kabita Rabha, the women cadre was arrested from Udalbakra area in the city. A CD along with some incriminating document were seized from her possession.

IED found after PM’s visit

A beefed up security in Guwahati is of no use when bombs are found in the hear of the city.Police recovered an IED at Lalmati area hours after Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and President Pranab Mukherjee left the city. Basistha police recovered the powerful IED from a vehicle after it was noticed by a passer by.

Big dam turbines blocked in Nagaon

Protest over the NHPC-owned mega dams in Gurukamukh seems to have escalated further when KMSS blocked 14 trucks carrying turbines halfway.KMSS activists sent these trucks back to Guwahati on Wednesday night from Amoni in Nagaon district on way to Gerukamukh via Tezpur.
