Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Boat mishap: 2 killed

Two persons died when a vegetable boat met with a tragic mishap on the river Brahmaputra in Kamrup district on Sunday.It took place in the afternoon when the boat was on its way from Rani Chapori to Garal. There were three persons when the boat met with the tragic mishap because of a severe dust storm. One of them managed to escape death. Two others died and the bodies were fished out on Monday morning by NDRF personnel. 

Dissident MLAs in New Delhi

Five dissident Congress MLAs are camping in New Delhi to meet party president Sonia Gandhi. Led by former MP Kirip Chaliha, they are reportedly waiting to call on Gandhi’s political adviser Ahmed Patel on Monday to air their grievances. Comprising They include Jayanta Malla Baruah, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Rajen Barthakur, Pradan Baruah and Sushmita Dev, they are expected to request Ahmed to help them meet Gandhi in near future.They left Guwahati in on Sunday afternoon after an APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita left for the capital.

APCC reiterates gag order

Amid intensified dissidence, APCC on Sunday asked party legislators and leaders not to air any grievances before the media. The order came up after the APCC met at the Rajiv Bhawan presided over by Bhubneswar Kalita. But immediately after it dissident MLAs are firm on their stand. That too against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Led by former MP Kirip Chaliha, the dissident legislators have arrived in New Delhi on Sunday to take the grievances to party president Sonia Gandhi. Sarma dares CM on tobacco bill

The war of words between Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma takes an interesting turn on Sunday. Dr Sarma virtually dared Gogoi to substantiate the allegations that he was averse to bring the anti-tobacco legislation citing revenue loss. The Chief Minister on Saturday said that he was told that the state would incur revenue loss if a legislation is brought to ban gutkha.

KMSS has elected its leader Akhil Gogoi as new president. Gogoi, the founder of the peasant body was elected at its crucial general meeting in Pathsala on Saturday. Kamal Kumar Medhi and Bedanta Medhi would be the joint secretary of the organization. The organization is in a process to open a political party very soon.    

Tobacco ignites Gogoi-Sarma difference

Amid conflict between Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the former refused to bring a legislation in the Assam assembly to ban Gutkha.According to Gogoi, it would be more convenient to ban harmful tobacco products under the existing Food Safety Act because the latter had been upheld by courts, including the Supreme Court.It’s a major embarrassment for Dr Sarma who often boasts of his landmark initiative to bring the legislation.

Anup reluctant to join talks!

The much-hyped ULFA government peace process seems to have been depending on Anup Chetia.The ULFA leader is believed to have been averse to join the peace process which is why, he is not in a mood to be repatriated from Bangladesh. Chetia is yet to make his decision formal even after he met two pro talk ULFA leaders in Dhaka last month.  Chetia was urged to withdraw his plea before the Bangladesh  apex court seeking political asylum. Chetia’s reluctance is expected to be a big blow to the peace process.

Beware syndicate owners

Amid simmering allegations of clear link Congress dissidence with syndicate, the Assam government rolls up its sleeves to probe it very soon.Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday admitted that syndicates have been operating in different parts of the state where the truckers are taxed bereft of any reason. Gogoi’s ire assumes significance a few days after KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi alleged syndicate by dissident Congress MLAs where the common people have been bearing the brunt.

Meet on NRC meet on Monday

Delhi and Dispur are gearing up to finalise the NRC updating process. A meeting between the State Government and the Centre will be held in Delhi on Monday to kick-start the process.Dispur is in a process to increase the number of foreigners tribunals for expediting the detection and deportation of illegal foreigners through the judicial process.An advisory council with Justice KN Saikia, PK Chaudhury and Sankar Barua has been formed on the issue of NRC and illegal foreigners living in the State.
