Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Assam flood scene grim

At least 10 districts are reeling under flood water. The worst-hit are river island Majuli and the Kaziranga National Park. Rising water of the Brahmaputra has inundated vast tracts of land in Kaziranga's Burapahar, Bagori and northern parts of Agratoli with three animal casualty reported. Two deer were knocked down by speeding vehicles in Harmoti area when they were on way to the highlands, while an elephant drowned in the flood waters in Bagori range.

Foreigners injured in accident

Three foreign tourists have been injured as their vehicles overturned in Kamrup district Monday.They were on their way to Siliguri en route to Sikkim when their vehicle turned turtle at Ghakuchi.Identified as Andrew John, Stephen Doneur and Sarit Jay Patel -- were injured in the incident with John being in a critical condition while the two others received minor injuries. The trio  were admitted to the Rangiya Civil Hospital but were later referred to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.

Poachers caught

Two poachers were apprehended by police in Golaghat district on Monday.Acting on a tip-off, the police launched a search operation in Balijan Adarsh Mising village under Bokakhat police station and arrested the two from their residence.Police recovered a Chinese made M-22 rifle with seven rounds of ammunitions and a .303 rifle with six cartridges from the poachers who have been identified as Zila Doley and Bhaiti Pegu.The duo llegedly involved in the recent killings of a rhino and removal of its horns in Kaziranga National Park were apprehended by police in Golaghat district.

Encounter: 2 NDFB militants killed

Two cadres of the Songbijit faction NDFB were killed in an encounter with security forces at Audang Bazaar in Kokrajhar on Sunday. But the  family members of the deceased claimed it to be a fake encounter.They  identified as Rahul Brahma @ B Rugung and Anjalu Brahma @ Maru @ Udang was killed in encounter during the search operation around 9.20 in the morning at Audang Bazaar in Kokrajhar. Two pistols, a grenade and two extortion notes were recovered from their possession. Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) has extended its moral support to the agitating media poisons of Manipur on its struggle against the militants. The Assam based scribe’s body argues that the media persons under the banner of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) have taken a significant stand against the armed militants who have dared to threaten the media with their gun power.“In any situation, the media should (must) not be dictated in a democratic country. Dengue toll goes up to 3

The killer dengue claimed one more life in Guwahati on Thursday. Zoo Road resident Raju Dewan died of the disease at Down Town Hospital on Wednesday three days after his wife Loni died of the same disease. Explosion before Cinema hall

Panic grips in Bongaigaon town when NDFB militants triggered a bomb on Wednesday.There is no report of any casualty and damage to property. But the target was believed to be the Mayapuri cinema hall.Preliminary investigation suggests it a crude bomb, which was attached to a cycle parked in the area, triggered off the incident.
