Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Goswami’s death shrouded in mystery

Dr Bhagawan Goswami’s death seems to have shrouded in mystery a day after the lifeless professor of the Cotton College was recovered on the Brahmaputra in Panbazar on Monday.After the post mortem, his family members have called it a cold blooded murder citing a number of clues. 3 accidents: 8 dead

Amid Bhugali bihu festivity at least eight persons were killed and 10 others have been injured in three different road mishaps on Tuesday wee hours.In a shocking mishap, four policemen were killed when the Scorpio vehicle carrying them collided head with a truck in Laluk in the wee hours. Bhugali Bihu celebration going on

Amid much fanfare and extravaganza, Bhugali Bihu is being celebrated across the state on Tuesday. RS polls on February 7

The Election Commission is set to hold polls for three Rajya Sabha seats from Assam on February 7.According to information available with assamtimes, the country’s poll panel is expected to issue poll notification on January 21 for the three seats. The results are expected on the voting day.Notably, the term for three sitting Rajya Sabha members will end in March this year. They are Bhubneswar Kalita from Congress, Birendra Prasad Baishya from Asom Gana Parishad and Biswajeet Daimary from Bodoland Peoples’ Front.

Assembly session on Feb 10

Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik has convened a day long session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on February 10. In his notification issued on Monday, the Governor has summoned the Assembly at 9 am on February 10. The session will pass a vote on account in lieu of a full fledged budget for 2014-2015 in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha poll. Missing prof’s body found

Dr Bhagawan Goswami’s body was recovered in Panbazar nine days after the Cotton College professor went missing from Chandmari in Guwahati. His body was spotted floating on the river Brahmaputra just behind the Deputy Commission’s old residence in the afternoon. Later it was identified by the family members.Sources told Assam Times that the body bore no injury marks and his mobile phone and money bag was recovered inside his jacket. Price hike in the time of bihu
