Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Absu ends hunger strike

The All Bodo Students’ Union finally ended its indefinite hunger strike with lemon water from the hands of Mangalsing Narzary.The decision was taken after the Centre invited them for tripartite talks on September 4. ABSU president Pramod Boro declared  withdrawal  of  their 52 hr long indefinite hunger strike on Saturday . The student leaders  now expects the Centre to show their sincerity on the issue and will not tolerate any kind of conspiracy.

Food poisoning revisits

At least 40 people have fallen ill after consuming food at a religious function near Hajo in Kamrup district on Saturday. The individual religious  function took place at a house on Friday night. After the puja, the invitees consumed 'prasad' and started complaining of uneasiness. Over 40 people suffered from vomiting and loose motion. Altogether 10 persons have been released from the hospital while 30 others are undergoing treatment.

CM reviews law and order

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday reviewed the state’s overall security scenario a day after ULFA struck at Mangoldoi police station.The meeting is believed to have decided to step up offensive against the insurgent outfits in the state.Apart from DGP Jayanta Narayan Chaudhury, ADGP, IGP, Chief secretary were also attended the meeting. Meanwhile, police have picked up four persons in this connection.

A set of laws is on the cards to deal with the witch-hunting cases in the state.The decision got a final shape at a meeting of the top police and civil officials at the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s official residence in Koinadhara. Haryana has seen yet another instance of an outstation girl being sold to be raped. This time a girl hailing from Assam was allegedly raped by four men. The shocking tale came to light on August 18. The 19 year old Assam gave a slip to her captor and fled to Delhi. Then she met social a activist who after hearing her plight helped her lodge a FIR at Sarai Rohilla police station in the Capital.

9 injured in ULFA attack

Atleast nine persons including four journalists sustained injury when ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Mongoldoi on Thursday. The incident took place at the police station campus at 6.30 in the evening. Eyewitnesses told assamtimes that two motorcycle born youths lobbed the IED from the national highway to the campus targetting a function. The explosion took place with a huge sound leaving 9 people injured. They include 2 policemen and 4 journalists who were covering the function.The injured have been rushed to the hospital. Hours after the attack, the insurgent outfit owned up the responsibilty of the incident.
