FASS to distribute free solar reading lamps in the Northeast

Friends of Assam and seven Sisters (FASS) International is announcing launching of its project to distribute Solar Reading Lamps free to deserving students in North East India under the project named  “Let There Be Lights for Education in Assam and Seven Sisters”. The project is launched in Assam and Manipur at the same time. On January 12, 2013, Saturday in a public meeting arranged by FASS at Jorhat Press Club, in collaboration with Sabda Education Trust of Jorhat, 25 selected deserving students from rural areas around Jorhat district were given free Solar Reading Lamps along with a certificate from FASS. Sjt. Kamal Jyoti gogoi, AES, School Inspector of Jorhat, presided over the meeting while Dr. Anil Saikia, HOD, Economics Dept. Kakajan College was the Chief Guest. Others in attendance were Professor Niren Barua, President of FASS Jorhat Chapter, Sjta Jogmaya Debi, the President of Assam Lekhika Organization, Sjt Ratul Gohain, Secretary of Teachers Association of Jorhat Dist and others. The meeting was well attended with students, parents and teachers. Sri Niren Barua gave an introduction of the FASS and its activities and explained the Solar Lamp project. Sri Ranjit Gogoi and Ujjal Powgam, from Sabda Education Trust and FASS members from Jorhat, also spoke and  discussed how they could expand the solar reading lamp project further in different areas of Assam and North East. All praised the FASS project of distribution of free solar reading lamps  among the deserving students.

Another ten Solar Reading lamps were distributed to 10 students in villages around Imphal, Manipur during this week. In a statement on the occasion, Mr Satkhokai Chongloi, FASS Coordinator from Manipur,  stated, “In a place like Manipur irregularity of electricity is one of the most concern for the students especially before their final exams. When students learned that FASS would  provide solar reading lamps, they were all very excited. I have distributed the lamps to students and all students were very happy. I hope this will help them cope with irregularity of light and score better grade in the coming year. I als hope that the program would continue“

The book "পৃথিবীৰ কৱিতা" (Poetry of the World), edited and translated by Rajen Barua was released in USA on February 22, 2014 at a meeting of AALC (Assamese American Literary Circle) in Houston.
