Oil India Limited dethroned defending champion Assam State Electricity Board in the Assam Club Championship at Bokakhat on 23rd DEC with a 4-1 victory in a rematch of last year's final. Looking to avenge the defeat at the hands of the ASEB in the previous final, the OIL team played smart football and dominated the game throughout.The OIL think tank chose the 1-4-5-1 formation to the ASEB's 1-4-4-2 pattern and it proved to be a winning strategy. OIL took the lead with captain Birjab Mushahary's winger off a corner as early as in the sixth minute. Durga Boro scored the second goal three minutes later. After missing several scoring opportunities, ASEB bounced back in the 39th minute through captain Suresh Das. The first half ended with a 2-1 score.Mushahary gave OIL a good start with a goal in the ninth minute of the second half. Mintu Boro scored the fourth and last goal for OIL in the 20th minute to take the match beyond ASEB. ASEB goalkeeper Mintu Sonowal again failed to put up a good performance, which compounded his team's woes. ASEB's Suresh Das was adjudged the best player of the meet, Manash Manjit Chetia of Nepathya Club of Jorhat was the top scorer and Jintu Chetri of OIL the best goalkeeper. Salbagan Sports Club won the fair play trophy. Former national player Amal Changmai, sports joint secretary Pranab Kumar Bora, Golaghat SP P.C. As many as 23 teams competed in the tournament. The champion squad will get to play in the National B-Division league.
Assam truck owners may go on an indefinite strike, if the Meghalaya Government fails to curb 'illegal check gates' in the State.In a memorandum to Meghalaya Chief Minister, the Goalpara District Truck Owners Association said despite repeated requests, the government has not taken any to abolish the unauthorised check gates, pollution testing centres and weigh bridges on NH-62.They further gave a list of such illegal check gates in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya and threatened to call for an indefinite 'chakka bandh' if the Mehalaya Government failed once again to take action against them.

An all party delegation from Assam is schedule to call on Union home minister P Chidambaram in Delhi on Friday to exert pressure on the Centre to expedite sealing of the porous Indo-Bangla border. The delegation on Thursday met external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee in the national capital and made the same request. Police have arrested two suspected ultras of Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami with arms and ammunition in Sonitpur district.According to information, A battalion of Assam Rifles nabbed them at Thelamara near Borgaon. Two 9-mm pistols, three cartridges, a mobile set and Rs 712 were recovered from their possession.Police claimed they have been identified as Rafique Ali and Muhamad Ali of Nagaon district.The militants are suspected to be indulged in subversive activities at Bodo Sahitya Sabha venue at Borgaon where a large number of people had gathered for a three-day literary meeting of ethnic Bodos.
Two policemen and a hardcore ULFA cadre died at an encounter in Sivasagar district on Thursday. According to information, the encounter took place at Kanubari area under Charaideo sub division in the district. Four powerful IED have been recovered from the spot. Army and CRPF jawans are also present in the encounter. The deceased policemen were identified as Bhimkanta Upadhay, an ASI and constable Debojit Buragohain.
