Assam seems to have improved on a few vital fronts. According to the provisional census data released in Guwahati on Friday, 44.1% of households avail banking services, as against 20.5% as reported in the previous Census. In the rural areas, 38.3 % people avail banking services and figure in urban areas is over 75%.
Over 66 percent of households resided in homes having walls made of grass, thatch or bamboo. But, 74.2% houses had roofs made of GI, metal or asbestos sheets.
For 37.1 % households electricity was the main source of lighting, up from 25 % in 2001 Census. But kerosene remained the major source of light for 61.8 % households and 0.8% were using solar power.
Only 54.8% of households have drinking water facility available within their premises, up from 37.9% as per the 2001 Census. The Census was conducted between 1 April to 15 May 2010, covered a population of 3.11 crore in over 26,000 villages and 214 towns of Assam. It covered 63.7 lakh households.

Dozens of people sustained injury when a passenger train jumped off the tracks in Jagiroad on Wednesday. The incident took place in the wee hours when ten coaches of the Dimapur-Kamakhya passenger train toppled from the rails leaving 50 injured. Security forces seized a huge cache of plastic explosives from three youths who were on their way to target a power station in Dhemaji district on Saturday.According to police, the three youths, sped away on their motorcycles, when signalled to stop during a routine check near the Panbari border outpost under Gerukamukh police station.They were caught and arrested following a chase after three packets of plastic explosives, five packets of fuse wire, six fuses and daggers were found in their possession.Identified as Pranendra Wari, Nakesh Narzari and Hemkanta Narzari, they were targeting the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation at the Gerukamukh dam site.

Over 50 people have been injured when an ATSC bus overturned in the outskirt if Guwahati on Friday. The accident took place when the Assam State Transport Corporation owned bus on its way to Guwahati from Barpeta, was trying to overtake a truck when it overturned and rolled down the road to a nearby field in Nayanpur area.The condition of five injured was stated to be critical. They were admitted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, while the others are being treated at the Hajo Primary Health Care centre.
