Congress ups ita ante against Mahanta

Stung by the cry for President’s Rule, Dispur is contemplating to corner Prafulla Kumar Mahanta by reopening the LoC scam beside making the Justice KN Saikia Report public.

Reliable sources in the Rajiv Bhawan here say the Assam Government may approach the CBI to implicate the former Chief Minister in the multi-crore scam in the animal husbandry and veterinary department where the investigating agency was denied permission by the then Governor Lt General (Retd) S K Sinha.

Now the entire move is in the light of a Supreme     Court verdict that the CBI needs no permission to prosecute a public servant, say sources adding that if the CBI reopens the file, Mr Mahanta could land in trouble.

Besides, the Assam Government may make the part of the Secret Killing Report public, where Mr Mahanta is widely believed to be indicted. The Justice K N Saikia Commission has already submitted two reports before the Chief Minister which are being kept pending.

On the other hand, there is widespread demand to make the report public from several quarters which could put the former Chief Minister in peril. The Saikia panel is inquiring into the extra judicial killings that took place during Mr Mahanta’s regime. The demand is also from within the regional party which he was leading for many years till he floated the Asom Gana Parishad (Prgatishil).

Notably, backed by Mr Mahanta, a trade body has recently called on President APJ Abdul Kalam and home minister Shivraj Patil and demanded President’s Rule in the state citing the deteriorating law and order situation.

Informed sources here say, the Commission is almost finalizing the final report of the probe in to the secret killings which took place during Mr Mahanta’s tenure. The commission will finalise the report by the first week of July to place before the Chief Minister in August.  

According to Mr Mahanta, the Tarun Gogoi Government has been failing to ensure security for the people. Everyday there is incidents of blast, shoot out and what not. All these are clear indication of Mr Gogoi’s failure to deal with the situation.

Curfew in Guwahati as 16 killed, 200 injured in mob violence

As many as thirteen people have been killed, about two hundred injured on Saturday while some Adivasi people clashed with the local residents in the city’s Beltola area forcing the authorities to impose curfew in Ganeshguri and Dispur and then to Khanapara.According to police, the clash began as soon as some ten thousand Adivasi people, armed with bows and arrows were taking out a processing towards the Capital complex demanding schedule tribe status. State panel ready for panchayat polls

The State Election Commission (SEC) is gearing up for holding a free and fair panchayat polls in the state as the Gauhati High Court has cleared the decks.According to information, the poll notification will be issued on November 29 and the model code of conduct will come into force.The authority has already issued strict instructions to the district administrations for necessary arrangement to make the polls a free and fair.The state poll panel will hold the election in three phases and the results are expected before January 15. Retirement age up by one year

The retirement age of Assam government employees rises up to 60 years. The order was issued on Tuesday to come into effect from November 30.According to official estimates, more than 6000 employees will benefit from this extension who reach their superannuation.The Assam government raised the retirement age to 59 from 58 years just before the last Assembly polls in 2005.

Scam resurfaces in 10th APBn

A huge fund scam resurfaces in Assam police in its Tenth Assam Police Battalion. It is now being probed by the Criminal Investigation Department for alleged misappropriation of funds to the tune of several crores. Meanwhile, Dispur police on Tuesday arrested two fourth Assam Police battalion employees for siphoning off funds. The arrested employees are Hemanta Baruah and Nur Alam.

Tiwa students withdrew 48 hr central Assam bandh

The Tiwa students bodies have withdrawn the 48 hour bandh call from Monday morning.Speaking to Assam Times over telephone, the leaders with the organisation say the decision was taken in view of the meeting with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on November 22 at Dispur.Mr Gogoi has already confirmed it, they say. The student bodies were striking in protest against the government move to hold panchayat polls in the areas falling under the Tiwa Autonomous District Councils.They were preparing for a three hour long road blockade in Jagiroad on November 27.
