Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.
The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.
She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.
Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.
A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday raided the Lamyanba Complex at Kunung Mamang in Imphal East. A team of CRPF and state police led by the agency raided the complex at around 11 AM where the offices of the Ireibak daily, Lamyanba Communications, Lamyanba Printers and a Polo Club are located. A man has been arrested by police for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl in Sugnu, Thoubal district on April 25. The incident happened On apri 24 night at Sugnu Awang Leikai when 61-year-old Thokchom Menjor molested a nine-year-old girl of the same locality and tried to rape her inside his house. An irate mob beaten him up and dismantled the house. Later, he was arrested by Thoubal police and remanded to police custody for five days, they said.

In recently concluded Assembly Election, some stunning facts came into light regarding the polling pattern of 23 Dhubri Assembly Constituency, which has 15 Gaon Panchyats and a Municipal area.
