Mamoni Raisom Goswami passes away


Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.


The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.


She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.


Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.


A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

The management of Romai Tea Estate, Dibrugarh observed World Environment Day on June 5, 6 at estate's primary school premises. The campus of Guwahati Press Club has been converted into a Wi-Fi internet zone from today. The Wi-Fi Internet Service in the press club premises was inaugurated on June 6 (Monday). The specific service, offered by Java Internet Services Private Limited will be available for the member-journalists free of cost. Some unknown persons triggered two bombs at the residence of a social worker at Kamfasong village, Fungreitang about 3 km east of Ukhrul police station in Ukhrul district of Manipur, official sources said. The two bombs were blasted after landing at the courtyard of social worker, Simthi R Simarei(55) around 9:25 pm on Sunday. No group has so far not claimed responsibility. A team of Manipur police and Anti –Drug Association Khetrigao (ADA) seized a large number of illegal drugs from an individual last night, police said on Sunday. A combined team of Porompat police and ADA raided a house belonging to one Md Sabir(26) at Khetrigao Awang Leikai, Imphal East last night around 9 pm after receiving information that illegal drugs were hiding in the house. Some 1920 capsules and 250 tablets of Spasmo Proxomo were seized from the house, they said. The seized drugs were destroyed this morning inside the compound of Porompat police station.
