Mamoni Raisom Goswami passes away

Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.


The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.


She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.


Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.


A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

ULFA submits charter of demands before Centre

EMFA appeals for Restrains

The Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) has expressed its concern over the ongoing controversy on a social networking site (SNS) and its implications on media persons as a whole in the State. Explosion in Goalpara; 3 IEDs found in Rangiya

The United Liberation Front of Asom seems to have stepped up it subversive activities in the run up to the Independence Day. There is report of an explosion in Goalpara which took place near a fish market. But there is no report of any casualty. Security forces reached the spot and operation is underway. AASU, 24 other bodies hold protest rally

Thousands of students from AASU and 24 other student bodies held a huge rally in Guwahati on Saturday raising the demands to stop the NHPC-owned big dams. The student bodies who held the rally at the Latasheel Playground further demanded immediate resumption of the NRC project besides steps to check erosion, conservation of Majuli. The rally resolved to resist the move to transport the big dam turbines to Gerukamukh via Tezpur through the Brahmaputra riverways.The protesters further shouted anti-government slogans as they were taking out a procession from Panbazar to Chandmari.

No let up in Hazarika’s condition

Legendary singer and composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s condition is critical. The pride of Assam, who has been undergoing treatment Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai since June 29 still complains of difficulty in breathing. According to sources, his condition is refusing to improve during the last 12 hours. Cutting across all affiliations, parties and organizations in Assam are praying to the god for his speedy recovery. The 85 year old Hazarika is also a noted poet and actor and has been honoured with several prestigious awards, including Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan.

Assam fighting with killer Japanese encephalitis: toll 50

The killer malaria and encephalitis seems to have taken an epidemic turn claiming more than 50 lives during the last 3 months. In Sivasagar district alone altogether 35 people died of Japanese encephalitis and malaria forcing the authorities to keep the people alert. Seven persons have died of encephalitis in Nalbari district in the last few days.The victims have been identified as Sultan Mamood, Gajen Deka, Murtunjoy Deka, Sunita Das, Mukuta Ali, Labanya Kalita and Nitumoni. Ray of hope in burning Bodoland as NDFB(R) announces ceasefire

Peace seems to have a chance in the restive Bodoland. Major political parties, organizations are heaving a sigh of relief a day after NDFB’s Ranjan Daimary faction annou7nced unilateral ceasefire with the government. The outfit decided to suspend the hostile activities from August 1 when they were holding their general meeting on Monday. They hope that the ceasefire will help the Bodo people get their problems solved permanently. Obituary: Ahindra Kumar Choudhury

Ahindra Kumar Choudhury, IAS (retired), former Director, Assam Administrative Staff College, passed away at his residence in Guwahati on July 20, 2010. Mr. Choudhury joined Assam Civil Service in 1962, and was subsequently promoted to IAS. In his illustrious career, he held several positions including Managing Director, Assam Agro-Industries Development Corporation Limited; Managing Director, STATEFED; and Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Assam.
