The entire Assam on Saturday plunged in to a pall of gloom when the news of Dr Bhupen Hazarika's death was spreading like wild fire.
His family members have been camping in Mumbai after he was rushed to the hospital in June.
President Pratibha Patil led the nation to condole the death of the maestro. Vice President Dr Hamid Ansari, Prime minister Manmohan Singh, Assam Governor JB Patnaik and Chief minister Tarun Gogoi have mourned Dr Hazarika’s death. Gogoi said,"his loss is a great loss for the country. His music was universal.”
His long time associate and film maker Kalpana Lajmi who was beside Hazarika till the end of the moment said,” his spirit was great, but what to do, his body gave way. It is a very difficult time for all of us. The doctors did a wonderful job.”
Condolence and prayer meetings are being held across the state in the evening. Fans and well wishers across the state came out on the streets singing his popular songs and holding street corner prayer meetings by lighting earthen lamps.
Meanwhile, the Assam government is gearing up for his last rites in Guwahati on Wednesday or Thursday.

Guwahati : An elephant aged about 12 to 15 days has been rescued by the Assam State Zoo Authority from the Rani Reserve Forest today and kept at the Zoo premises, Guwahati on 22-08-07.According to Zoo officials the rescued elephant had deviated from his mother and has been found alone in the Rani Reserve Forest area. Guwahati: The string of attacks on Hindi-speaking people refuse to die down as some miscreants hurled a grenade at the home of a Hindi speaking family at Hojai on Wednesday wee hours.According to information, some unidentified miscreants lobbed a grenade into the compound of school teacher Ranjit Prasad Gupta’s residence at Natun Bazar, Pukhuripur at Hojai town. Sivasagar : The frozen dead body of an Assamese soldier, who was killed in a plane crash long back in 1968, has been handed over to his family at Deodhai village in Sivsagar district on Tuesday. His body was recovered from Chandrabhaga peak in Himachal Pradesh on August 2 by an army troops. Army brought Phukan’s body, wrapped in the Indian flag, to his native village which was cremated with full military honors. Finally there is proof that the Al Qaida activists are operating in Northeast India.Assam Rifles team engaged in counter insurgency team captured 15 insurgents in the border of Myanmar near Moreh Town in Manipur.The captured militants admitted to having links with the Al Qaida and propogating and collecting funds on its behalf.
