The entire Assam on Saturday plunged in to a pall of gloom when the news of Dr Bhupen Hazarika's death was spreading like wild fire.
His family members have been camping in Mumbai after he was rushed to the hospital in June.
President Pratibha Patil led the nation to condole the death of the maestro. Vice President Dr Hamid Ansari, Prime minister Manmohan Singh, Assam Governor JB Patnaik and Chief minister Tarun Gogoi have mourned Dr Hazarika’s death. Gogoi said,"his loss is a great loss for the country. His music was universal.”
His long time associate and film maker Kalpana Lajmi who was beside Hazarika till the end of the moment said,” his spirit was great, but what to do, his body gave way. It is a very difficult time for all of us. The doctors did a wonderful job.”
Condolence and prayer meetings are being held across the state in the evening. Fans and well wishers across the state came out on the streets singing his popular songs and holding street corner prayer meetings by lighting earthen lamps.
Meanwhile, the Assam government is gearing up for his last rites in Guwahati on Wednesday or Thursday.

I am very happy to inform you that my sons Shiva Thapa and Govind Thapa won Gold Medal in the 5th Super Cup Inter-Zonal Men National Boxing Championship 2011 held at Mumbai from March 30 to April 3. Shiva Thapa (Bantam 56 kg) won Gold Medal in this Championship. Shiva Thapa scored 4:1 and defeated Anil Kumar of East Zone. Govind Thapa (Light 60 kg) won Gold Medal in this Championship. Govind Thapa scored 3:2 and defeated Vijay Kumar of Haryana.

The doctors, nursing staff and employees union of Kusal Kanwar Civil Hospital took out a protest rally and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner for providing security to the employees during working hours in the hospital campus. Altogether 85,09,011 voters are expected to decide on the fate of 485 candidates in 62 assembly constituencies in Assam on Monday in the first phase of assembly polls. Assam Times special poll squad came to see huge queue of voters in front of polling booths after the polling began at 7 in the morning. Till 12 am the turn out is said to be 50 per cent. If this trend continues, the overall turn out is likely to cross a high 85 per cent in altogether 11,000 booths in 13 districts. There is, however, no report of any untoward incident so far.
