Two Scribes physically assaulted at Barpeta by police personnel

Two senior scribes
of Barpeta, Priya Ranjan Das, president, Barpeta press club vs.

Pratidin, Barpeta were physically assaulted by one inspector of police and police constable at
Barpeta press club premises last night. At the sudden attack of the
intoxicated police the journalists of Barpeta were at a loss and
informed the incident to the district administration as well as the
police administration. According to report said that after the enjoyment
of India-Pakistan cricket, at Barpeta press club along with other
journalists Priya Ranjan Das, president Barpeta press club, on the way
to his home face to face with the police checking at Barpeta Panch-Ali
chowk. But in the name of checking the motor-bike police
group ill- behaved him even after showing them the press card.The police
personnel’s were intoxicated and tried to take him to the police
station at that moment. Priya Ranjan das informed about the matter in
the other members of Barpeta press club who were busy at that moment for
the preparation of a programme on 1st April/11 ‘ Meet The Press’ with the election Candidates of the district. While the journalists were discussing about the matter a group of police personnels came to the Barpeta press club and physically assaulted Priyaranjan Das and Nabajit Das at the press club premises.

The police personnel involved in the said act, identified as – Tulu Mani Bora, Ajay Barman, Badri Prasad Baruwati who were the probationary police inspector and asstt
Inspector of police Labanya Rajkhowa. As soon as the incident occurred
the additional SP barpeta Mihirjit Gayan and Tilak Ch Deka, OC, Barpeta
PS rushed to Barpeta press club and assured the journalists of Barpeta
to punish the police personnels who were involved in this incident.

An
FIR was lodged against the police personnel by the Barpeta press club.The MLA of
Sarukshetry LAC and congress candidate Dr. Tara Prasad Das, and people
of various organizations of Barpeta gathered at Barpeta press club
premises and regretted for such type of unavoidable situation. A
memorandum was also submitted to the Home secy, Assam and DGP, Assam
through the DC Barpeta and SP Barpeta.

Meanwhile, various
organizations of Barpeta district condemned for the attack upon the scribes of
Barpeta. Barpeta District Union of Working Journalists, Journalists
Union of Assam, Barpeta Sub division journalists Union, Bahari press
club, Kayakuchi press club, Barpeta road press club, Barpeta district
AASU, Asom Sena, Barpeta, AGP, Barpeta, Asom Pradesh Youth Congress,
AJYCPJ etc organizations condemned for the sudden attack upon the fourth
estate of the constitution of India and urged to punish the guilty police personnel immediately.
